VENUS

The car came to a violent, final halt. The air was thick with burnt rubber, smoke, and the metallic tang of fear. The silence that followed wasn’t peace-it was the suffocating pause before something final, something fatal. I could taste dust and terror.

My entire world had narrowed to the three small bodies pressed against mine. Sabine Jr., her face buried in my chest, was wailing-a high, piercing sound that cut through the ringing in my ears. Iris was sobbing silently, her shoulders trembling. George was a shaking knot of fear and fragile bravery, his small hand clutching my arm.

“Stay down! Keep your heads down!” Jake, the guard in the front seat, was shouting, his voice shredded by panic. He wrestled with the jammed door, his movements jerky and desperate.

Through the shattered window, I saw them-figures advancing through the smoke. Black tactical gear. Masks. No skin, no hesitation. They weren’t here to scare us. They were here to take us.

The realization hit like a physical blow: I had to get my children out.

“George, Iris,” I whispered, pulling their faces close to mine. My voice cut through their sobs like a blade. ” Listen to Mommy. Right now.”

They looked up, wide-eyed. That terror-their pure, innocent terror-gave me clarity sharper than steel.

“This is a game of hide-and-seek,” I lied, forcing my voice to steady. “You’re the hiders. The best hiders in the world.”

I shoved the passenger door-it groaned but didn’t budge. One more heave, and it cracked open just enough. Smoke and dust poured in, acrid and choking.

“George, you go first. Take Iris’s hand.”

George, bless his brave, foolish heart, swallowed his tears and nodded. He was seven, and in this horrifying moment, he became the man of the family.

“You’re going to run, okay? Past that fence-see it? The trees behind it?” I pointed through the haze toward the narrow gap in the treeline. “You run there and hide. Don’t stop. Don’t come out until you see your dad, Uncle Connor, or Uncle Colton. No one else, you hear me?”

“Mommy, no!” Iris clung to my robe, her voice breaking.

“You have to be strong for me, little love. George, promise me.”

“I promise,” he whispered, gripping Iris’s hand tighter.

I pushed them through the gap. They squeezed out-tiny, determined shapes disappearing into smoke. Outside, gunfire cracked again, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the ground. Jake.

“Run!” I hissed. George pulled Iris. They stumbled, scrambled, and then vanished into the trees.

Sabine Jr. was still clamped around my neck, screaming, her tiny body trembling against mine. I couldn’t move fast with her. Her cries were too loud, too desperate-a beacon in the chaos.

I forced a breath through my shaking chest and unbuckled her, wrapping her tightly in the torn remnants of my robe. The attackers were advancing quickly. Rick and the other security car were likely incapacitated or pinned down. My car was the target. “Shh, my sweet girl. Mommy’s here.”

The driver’s side door was jammed too, but adrenaline did what strength couldn’t. I forced it open and stumbled out, shielding Sabine Jr. with my body.

Two figures were on me instantly. Their presence filled the smoke, all black armor and menace.

“The two others!” one barked, pointing his weapon at me. “Where are they?”

I backed away, clutching my daughter tighter. “I don’t know what you’re talking about!” I screamed.

A gloved hand shot out and grabbed my arm. I twisted, fought, stumbled.

“You’ll tell us,” he snarled, pulling hard.

Then, there was a flash of movement from the second figure, the one who hadn’t spoken. I saw the weapon swing up, and I knew instantly, with a terrible, chilling certainty, that they weren’t going to negotiate.

A sharp, searing pain erupted in my left forearm. It felt less like a blow and more like a hot iron piercing my flesh. The impact spun me, the force of the projectile momentarily loosening my grip on Sabine, I gasped, a cry of pain ripped from my throat.

The attacker holding my daughter pulled harder. I resisted, planting my feet, the smell of my own blood suddenly heavy in the air.

Another shot. This time, the white-hot pain slammed into the same arm, just above the first wound, splintering through bone and muscle. My arm immediately went numb, useless, dropping like a dead weight. The agony was immediate, blinding, and overwhelming. I was drowning in the pain.

The first attacker, his eyes focused on the struggling child, used my pain to his advantage and ripped Sabine Jr.

free.

“No!” I screamed, a strangled sound of despair. I tried to reach for her with my good arm, stumbling forward, fighting the sudden, paralyzing weakness.

“They went for the trees! Search the perimeter!” the other attacker said. “Leave the child, that’s not the one we’re here for.”

He let go. They moved fast, dissolving into the fog and brush, chasing the two little ghosts who had run from me.

I slumped onto the gravel, dizzy. My good arm wrapped around my daughter as blood soaked into my robe. The world tilted. The smell of smoke and death filled my lungs.

The other cars were wrecked. Rick’s voice crackled and died over the radio. Bodies slumped where life had been moments ago.

I had to move. I had to get Sabine Jr. to safety, George and Iris were out there-and they were being hunted.

Gritting my teeth, I crawled. Every drag of my body sent white-hot pain tearing through my arm. The blood loss made me cold, my vision tunneling. I reached the far side of the car and collapsed, pressing Sabine Jr. to the dirt, covering her completely.

Her cries softened to small hiccups.

I could hear it all-the faint snap of twigs, the distant shouts of men combing the woods. They were close.

I pressed my lips to my daughter’s head. My voice was barely a breath. “Please, God. Keep them hidden. Let them get far. Don’t let them find George and Iris.”

Then the world dimmed. The pain ebbed. And everything went black.
