Chapter Si
They weren’t guarded. Not cold. Not unreadable.
They were watching me.
“Hey,” he said, voice rough with sleep.
“Hey.” I echoed, my voice barely above a whisper.

He crossed the room with quiet steps and sat on the edge of the bed, close but not touching. There was a kind of hesitance to him, like he wasn’t sure how this was supposed to go either.
His hand rested on his thigh, fingers twitching like they wanted reach for something. Or someone.
“You okay?” I asked.
He nodded, slow. “Yeah. Just thinking.”
His eyes met mine, searching. “You?”
I hesitated.
Then I breathed out the truth. “When I woke up and you weren’t here… I thought maybe you regretted it. Last night.”
His brows furrowed. “Why?”
I looked down, tracing a line in the sheet with my finger. “Because you don’t let people see you like that. You don’t let them in. And last night felt like you were opening a door. But if I made that up in my head, I need to know before I keep walking through it.”
The silence that followed wasn’t empty. It was filled with the weight of his thoughts.
Then finally
“It was, real,” he said, quiet but firm. “All of it.”
Relief slid through me like a tide I didn’t even realize I’d been holding back.
“I don’t let people in because I don’t want to,” he continued. “Because I don’t trust easily. And I can’t afford mistakes.”
He paused, like he was sorting through words he didn’t say often
“But with you… it’s different. You make me want to feel better. To be better. And that’s not something I know how to do.”
My heart pulled tight in my chest.
“Why not?” I asked.
He gave a hollow laugh. “Because you’re good, Venus. You care too much. You stay when you should run. And I’m… I’m not the guy people stay for.”
“That’s not true,” I said, reaching for his hand. “You’re worth staying for.”
He looked at our hands like they were some kind of puzzle.
“You don’t know everything,” he murmured.
“I know enough,” I whispered.
His thumb brushed my palm, slow. Intentional.

“You’re the first person I’ve ever let see me like that,” he said. “Not Andrea. Not anyone. What I had with her wasn’t this. Not even close.”
His honesty stunned me.
Not because I didn’t believe him.
But because he was giving it so freely.
“You make me different,” he admitted. “You make me think about things I buried years ago. About wanting more than just power or control or… silence”
I leaned in and rested my head on his shoulder. Just for a beat. Just to feel that we were still here. Still trying.
“I don’t need you perfect, Aaron,” I murmured. “I just need you real”
His body relaxed against mine. And for a few minutes, we said nothing.
Just breathed.
Together.
Eventually, I shifted, eyes flicking up to his.
“You’re brooding again,” I teased.
He raised a brow. “I do that.”
“Brood with me in the kitchen,” I said. “I’m starving.”
“Starving?”
I gave him a mock-serious look. “You made love to me like you were writing a symphony. You owe me breakfast.”
His laugh was soft, real.
He stood and offered his hand. I took it without hesitation.
Because this wasn’t just about last night.
It was about this morning.
This moment.
We weren’t healed.
We weren’t perfect.
But we were here.
And for now, that was enough.
