Chapter 99
VENUS
I sat on the floor, heart pounding, the air in my room suddenly too thick to breathe.
Gone.
The copy was gone.

I’d checked every drawer, every folder, every crevice where I usually kept anything remotely important. And it wasn’t just misplaced. No, I knew that kind of absence too well, it was the kind that came with intent. With someone’s fingers where they didn’t belong.
My hand dragged through my hair, trembling, before I cradled my head between my palms.
Then… I remembered.
That afternoon. Just before London.
“Can I get you something? Water? Juice?”
“Water’s fine.”
I’d left her on the couch. It took maybe three minutes in the kitchen.
When I came back-empty living room.
“Mom?”
No answer.
And then she stepped out of my room.
“Oh,” I’d said, surprised. “I thought you were in the living room.”
“I needed to use the restroom,” she replied smoothly, adjusting the sleeve of her blouse. “Hope you don’t mind.”
I should’ve minded.
My room didn’t have a bathroom. The guest restroom was closer. Two doors closer.
But I didn’t question it. Just nodded-like a fool.
She’d left right after. No hug. No warmth. Just a weird little smile and that same clipped tone she used when something was
off.
Now, I just sat there. Staring at nothing. Heart unraveling in slow motion.
No.
No, she wouldn’t. Would she?
She didn’t even know Dorian. She doesn’t dislike Aaron-not that I knew. But she had been one of the only people I trusted enough to let into this penthouse. My space. And Aaron? Aaron didn’t allow people in his. That was sacred ground.
So how the hell did the contract get out?

My skin prickled. Shame and anger warred inside me, each one sharper than the other. I wanted to believe it was impossible. That she was innocent. That there was a logical explanation.
But there wasn’t.
Not unless the universe was cruel enough to hand-deliver betrayal through blood.
“I’ll ask her,” I whispered into the silence. “I just… I’ll ask. I have to know.”
I rose slowly, like the floor beneath me might crack open and swallow the truth.
If she had nothing to hide, she’d tell me. Right?
But deep down, that bitter voice coiled through me-merciless.
She hadn’t hugged me goodbye.
She hadn’t even looked me in the eye.
And that kind of silence…
That kind of silence always screams guilt.
The city lights bled across the windshield in long, distorted streaks. The kind of night that looked too exhausted to hold its shape. I drove with my knuckles white on the wheel, mind pounding harder than my heart.
I shouldn’t have been out.
Not this late.
Not alone.
Not after what happened with Aaron.
But logic was out cold in the back seat.
Obsession was driving now.
I needed answers. I needed truth-even if it bled.
The apartment complex hadn’t changed. Dim porch light flickering like it was on its last breath. The stairs creaked. The railing wobbled. Everything familiar and just a little off, like a childhood dream turned nightmare.
I knocked. Three times.
Firm. Sharp. No hesitation.
The door opened almost immediately.
“Venus?”
Her voice carried surprise. Not the warm kind. The kind that’s laced with guilt.
She stood there in that same silk robe she always wore, hair pinned back, face too carefully composed.
“You’re back already?”

I forced a thin smile. “Can I come in?”
She stepped aside.

The living room smelled like lemon polish and burned incense. A candle flickered lazily on the coffee table. It felt… arranged. Like someone had cleaned the crime scene but forgot to scrub the air.
I sat.
She brought a glass of water without asking. Her voice feathered over me.
“Drink this. You look pale.”
I took it. Drank without thinking.
Stupid.
She sat across from me, folding her hands neatly on her lap.
“So,” she said softly. “What’s going on?”
I set the glass down and leaned in.
“Do you remember the last time you were at my place?”
She tilted her head slightly. “Of course.”
“You went into my room. Said you needed the restroom.”
Her expression didn’t change. “Yes?”
“The guest bathroom was closer.”
A flicker-quick. A glitch behind her eyes. Gone in an instant.
“I must’ve been confused. It was a long day.”
“Did you go through my things?”
The words cracked through the air like a whip.
Silence.
Then, gently, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yes, you do,” I whispered. “Please, Just tell me.”
She stood, moving toward the kitchen. “Venus, you’re tired. You should rest. Let me make you something-”
“No.”
My voice cut through hers.
“Don’t brush this off. I need the truth”
She turned slowly, smile gone. Her gaze-cold. Measured.
“You don’t want the truth,” she said. “You want comfort. And I don’t have that to give you.”

Chapter 99
And suddenly, the room tilted.
My pulse jumped.
Breath caught.
Something inside me… slipped.
I blinked hard. The edges of the walls started to smear. Limbs heavy. Air thick. Like I was moving underwater.
“Wha-”
I staggered.
Her voice followed, soft and syrupy.
“Relax, baby. Just rest.”
I dropped to my knees. Panic clawed at my throat.
And then-
I saw him.
Dain.
My father.
Textbook drunk. Shirt half-buttoned. Cold, glassy eyes.
Watching me from the hallway.
I hadn’t seen him in months.
Didn’t care to.
But now? Now he was here?
Everything inside me screamed.
And the last thought I had before darkness swallowed me whole was a single, splitting realization:
This wasn’t just betrayal.
It was family.
And that made it worse.
