Contracted To The Beast novel Chapter 97

Chapter 97

You can’t just lock me in here,” Nia stated angrily.

I ignored her for a moment and sat at the edge of the table as I texted my assistant to bring food for her.

“I’m talking to you, Maddox,” she crossed her arms in front of her chest, involuntarily raising her boobs that were alreally very prominent in her fitted polo shirt.

I let my eyes linger along her chest for a little bit before I looked up and caught sight of her irritated face.

“I’m not locking you up. I just want you to get comfortable and take a well-needed rest.”

“I’ll have your food brought in soon, okay?” I said to her as I turned around to walk out of my locker room.

I paused as I saw the scowl on her face.

“I can’t have you breaking down on me. You have to take care of yourself. So you’ll be able to take care of your daughter.”

She gave a deflated sigh before taking a seat on the table.

“How is she doing?”

“She’s stable now,” tears gathered in her eyes as she spoke. “I just never expected her to fall this ill. She didn’t have any serious symptoms, so I took her to the hospital and the doctor confirmed that she just had a mild flu. Only for, only for…”

I took a seat beside Nia, pulling her into my arms until her head rested on my chest, cradling her gently as she sobbed.

Her tiny body shook violently from the weight of her tears.

“She’ll be fine,” I managed to say after a while.

It probably took a lot for her to cry in front of me. The emotions I’m used to seeing from her are anger and irritation.

I squeezed her a little tighter, wishing there was something I could do to take her tears away.

“Would you mind if I have her transferred to a different hospital?” I asked softly.

She raised her head from my chest to face me. I wiped her tear-stained cheeks with my handkerchief.

“There’s no need. She’s well taken care of but I really appreciate the offer,” she said with a sad smile.

“You’re welcome,” I replied as I stared at her lips.

She smelled faintly of lavender shampoo and hospital disinfectant.

It shouldn’t have been possible for someone to look this exhausted and this beautiful at the same time.

I brushed a loose loc behind her ear before letting my hand rest lightly against her back.

She shivered almost imperceptibly beneath my touch.

For a heartbeat, neither of us moved.

She looked up at me, her eyes still damp from crying, and every thought in my head disappeared.

She wasn’t as immune to this feeling as she claimed. I removed my face from her neck and stroked her face gently.

I leaned forward until our foreheads almost touched.

Her lashes fluttered closed.

Every part of me wanted to kiss her.

Instead, I pressed a gentle kiss against one eyelid….then the other.

My lips lingered for the briefest second at the corner of her mouth before I forced myself to pull away.

Her eyes flew open immediately. I smiled as she couldn’t hide her surprise.

A knock on the door silenced her as she opened her mouth to speak. I got off the couch and opened the door to reveal eo with the food I ordered. He obviously didn’t let my assistant in. I smiled to myself. He’s very reliable.

“Thank you,” I said to him as I shut the door.

“Here you go,” I placed the food on the table in front of her. “I ordered you seafood pasta. You seem to be a big fan of seafood.”

“I am, thank you,” she replied.

“You’re welcome. I have practice to get to,” I said to her as I walked to the cupboard to pull out my hockey gear.

“What are you doing?” She asked, surprised, as I took off my shirt and pants.

“I have practice in ten minutes,” I said, reaching into my locker.

It wasn’t until I caught her staring at me with wide eyes that I realized what I’d just done.

“In front of me?” she asked.

“Last time I checked,” I said, unable to hide my grin, “this is still my locker room.”

“Eat,” I said, pointing my finger at the container.

“Yes, sir.”

“And sleep.”

She gave me a look.

“I’m serious.”
