Warmth wrapped around me. Soft sheets. The familiar musky scent of him. I pressed deeper into the pillow, not wanting to wake up yet. Sleep felt too good.
A hand brushed hair from my face, tenderly.
“Anna.”
His voice, deep and a little rough, pulled me fully awake.
My eyes shot open. Everything was blurry at first, soft morning light filtering through the windows. Then my vision focused.
Roman.
He sat on the edge of the bed, fully dressed in dark jeans and a white button-down with the sleeves rolled to his forearms. His hair was slightly damp, like he had recently showered. Those dark eyes watched me with an intensity that made my pulse quicken even in my drowsy state.
“Morning, sleepyhead.”
I blinked, disoriented. My hair was everywhere, tangled and wild across the pillow.
My mouth felt dry. I probably looked like an absolute disaster.
“What time is it?” My voice came out scratchy.
“Nearly one in the afternoon.” His lips curved into a small smile. “I didn’t mean to wake you, but considering how ravenous last night was, I thought you might be hungry.”
Last night.
The memories crashed over me all at once. The car. The wine-fueled confidence that made me take him in my mouth while he drove. How he had slammed on the brakes and dragged me onto his lap. The desperate way I had ridden him while his fingers worked inside me, both of us coming apart in that fogged-up space.
Heat flooded my cheeks.
I was still in his bed. In his estate. Wearing nothing but his shirt, the fabric soft and oversized, smelling like him.
“Oh my…” I pulled the sheets higher, suddenly hyperaware of how exposed I was.
Roman chuckled, the sound low and intimate. “A little late for modesty, don’t you think?”
Before I could respond, he stood and moved to a table by the window where a tray sat with food. Pastries. Fresh fruit. Coffee. Orange juice.

He lifted the tray and brought it to the bedside table, setting it down carefully.
Then he extended his hand to me. “Come. Eat.”

I stared at his hand, then down at myself. My hair was a complete catastrophe. I could feel it sticking up in every direction. No makeup. Pillow creases on my face. This was possibly the most unpresentable I had ever been in front of my boss.
I reached up, trying to smooth down the wild strands. “Mr. Blackwood, you’re going to need to give me a moment to get myself in order.”
I gestured at myself helplessly, knowing it was completely futile.
Roman threw his head back and laughed. The sound was rich and unguarded, transforming his usually serious face into something devastatingly handsome.
“Mr. Blackwood?” He leaned closer, bracing one hand on the mattress beside me. His eyes danced with amusement. “After last night, you’re worried about morning breath and messy hair?”
“Roman!” I gasped, mortification washing over me.
“What? It’s the truth.” His grin turned wicked. “You took me in your mouth. Rode me until we both came. Screamed my name loud enough that I’m surprised my security team didn’t come running.”
I grabbed a pillow and swatted at him. “You’re terrible.”
He caught the pillow easily, tossing it aside. Then he leaned in even closer, so close I could feel his minty breath against my lips.
“You look beautiful,” he murmured, his voice dropping to that dark note that made my stomach flip. “No makeup. Hair everywhere. My shirt on your body.” His thumb traced my jaw. “I’m finding it very difficult to resist you.”
My breath hitched. Despite how disheveled I felt, the way he looked at me made me feel beautiful. Wanted. Cherished, even.
“That’s a very smooth line, Mr. Blackwood.”
But confusion stirred inside me. This was not like him at all. He was not putting distance between us. Not reminding me this was just physical. He was acting like we were actual lovers. Like this meant more than a single night of passion.
That had not been the case in the past, with anyone, according to everything I had learned about him.
“It’s not a line if it’s true.” His lips brushed mine, feather-light. “And we both know I’m not a man who says things I don’t mean.”
I tried to pull away, but his hand wrapped around my waist, holding me in place.
“It’s too late to run from my touch now.”

His hands sent shivers down my spine as I tried to resist, tried to fight him off. “I need to take a shower. I need to feel comfortable before I can even think about eating.”
Roman’s jaw tightened, but he grudgingly pulled away. “Fine.”
He stood, running a hand through his hair. “You have ten minutes. I need to make some quick calls. You better be done by then.”
Then he was gone, the door clicking softly behind him.
I sat there for a moment, alone in his massive bedroom, trying to process everything. I had planned to go back home last night. I had every intention of maintaining professional boundaries. But then I had let my ego get the best of me, and now I was here.
I fell back onto the bed, staring at the ceiling.
Then I remembered. Ten minutes.
“Damn it!” I jumped up, cursing under my breath.
I threw back the covers and padded across the plush carpet to the bathroom. When I opened the door, I actually stopped and stared.
The bathroom was ridiculous. All marble and glass. The shower could have fit my entire apartment inside it. There was a bathtub the size of a small pool sitting right in front of a giant window, because apparently Roman had no neighbors to worry about.
Two sinks. Who needed two sinks when you lived alone?
I caught sight of myself in the mirror and winced.
Disaster was an understatement. My hair looked like I had been through a hurricane. My lips were swollen from his kisses. I had a faint mark on my neck that made me flush, remembering how it got there.
But my eyes were bright. Happy, even.
I looked like a woman who was on a romantic getaway with her boyfriend.
No. I shook my head at my reflection.
I’m his assistant. He’s my boss.
A boss who had made it crystal clear he did not do relationships. Who wanted a mistress, not a partner. Who could give me his body but never his heart.
And I was the idiot who had been crushing on him for months, stupid enough to think maybe this could be different. But it was not going to be.
Last night was a mistake. One I did not regret, but one that could never happen again if I did not want to end up jobless and with a broken heart.

On the counter, I spotted a brand new toothbrush still in its packaging. He had thought of everything.
I made quick work of brushing my teeth, then stepped into the massive shower.
The water pressure was incredible, hot and perfect. I found expensive bottles of shampoo and body wash, everything top-of-the-line.
I washed quickly, very aware that Roman could return at any moment. When I stepped out, I wrapped myself in the softest towel I had ever felt and realized my mistake.
I had nothing to wear. I had given him my dress last night when we got inside. It was ruined, stained with evidence of what we had done in the car.
Panic started to set in.
I wrapped the towel tighter and opened the bathroom door, peeking out carefully.
And froze.
