1 let my voice drop to that commanding tone that usually made people obey without question.
“You can hate me all you want in the car. You can curse me out. You can tell me what an asshole I am. But I’m not leaving you to get home alone at midnight”
I reached over and typed the lock code on the door panel. It beeped. The sound was loud in the tense silence as the lock engaged
She stared at the locked door for a long moment. Then she whirled on me, fury written across every line of her face.
“You have no right to keep me here!”
“I have every right to make sure you get home safely.”
She pointed a warning finger at me, her hand shaking with rage. “This is against my will! You can’t just there are laws. Consequences”
Fuck, I loved this
“You’re the perfect blend of innocence and defiance.”
I caught her pointing finger in my hand and used it to pull her against my chest.
“One minute begging for my cock, the next screaming that you hate me.”
If only she knew the restraint it was taking not to throw her back on that desk and finish what we had started, to show her exactly how much I wanted her. To bury myself so deep inside her that she would forget every word we had just exchanged.
She tried to yank her hand free, but I held firm.
I no longer care about you.” She tried harder to wrestle free of my hold, her body twisting against mine.
The friction of her movements sent heat straight through me.
I pinned her wrist between us, against my chest, holding her still.
“Yes, you do.”
I don’t!” She struggled harder, her free hand pushing against my shoulder.
“You’re angry. There’s a difference.”
Stop telling me what I feel!” Her voice rose, frustration bleeding through every word.
‘Stop lying about what you feel.” I held her tighter as she continued to wrestle against me.
Her eyes flashed with rage. “You’re the one who’s lying. You’re lying to yourself if you think this is noble. It’s cowardice.”
The accusation landed hard, but I didn’t let go.
Call it whatever you want. You’re still getting in that car.”

“Make me.” The challenge hung between us like a dare.
My eyes narrowed. “Don’t test me, Anna. Not tonight.”
“Or what?” She tilted her chin up defiantly, “You’ll throw me over your shoulder? Carry me out like some cav
“It I have to.”

She laughed, the sound bitter. “You’re unbelievable. You reject me, humiliate me, and now you want to play the protective hero?”
Tm not playing anything” I kept my voice firm despite the rage inside me. I’m making sure you get home safely?
“I don’t need your protection
“Too bad. You’re getting it anyway
“This is kidnapping!” She gave another violent twist, trying to break free.
This is common sense.” Theld her wrist firmly against my chest, feeling her pulse racing beneath my fingers.
“Common sense would have been not starting something you had no intention of finishing!”
The words hit harder than any physical blow could have.
“I started this with every intention of finishing it.” My voice came out quieter now. “But some things matter more than what I
want
“Like what?” She stopped struggling for a moment, breathing hard. “Your precious conscience? Your need to feel like the good guy?”
“You” I looked down at her, letting her see the truth in my eyes. “Like making sure I don’t ruin something I can’t fix.
She stared up at me, her chest rising and falling rapidly. Even angry and hurt, she was the most beautiful thing I had ever
seen.
For a moment, I thought she might cry again.
Anna wasn’t just another woman I could sleep with and forget. She was sweet, brilliant, and compassionate. She deserved a man who could give her everything. Not a bastard like me who would only break her heart.
Instead, she straightened her spine and lifted her chin with cold dignity.
“Fine.” The word came out like ice. “Drive me home. But don’t expect me to thank you for it.”
I slowly released her wrist, watching as she stepped back from me.
“I don’t expect anything from you.”
“Good.” She rubbed her wrist where I had held it, even though I knew I had not hurt her. “Because you’re getting nothing”
I unlocked the door and held it open for her.
She walked through without looking at me, her head held high despite the way her hands trembled slightly at her sides and the pain I knew I had caused.

And as I followed her out, watching her walk away from me with such anger and hurt radiating from every line of her bod I knew I had made the right choice.
Even if it killed me.
My eyes kept darting between the road and the side mirror, catching glimpses of Anna’s reflection. Her face toward the window.
The flush was still on her cheeks from what we had almost done. The tears were drying in tracks down her face. Her mouth stayed pressed into a tight line with anger and hurt.
God, she looked devastated.
And I had done that to her.
I wanted to pull over and cup her face in my hands and make her understand how desperately I wanted her.
How this had nothing to do with her not being good enough. How I was doing this for her, to protect her from the inevitable heartbreak I would cause
But the words stuck in my throat.
A horn blared.
I jerked the wheel, my heart hammering as I corrected course. The other car sped past, the driver gesturing angrily.
“Focus on the road,” I muttered to myself.
But focusing on anything except her was impossible.
Ten minutes later, I pulled up to her apartment complex. The building was modest and older, with security lights
Before I even shifted into park, Anna had her seatbelt undone.
Her hand reached for the door handle.
“Wait. I caught her wrist, stopping her. “Anna, we shouldn’t leave things unsettled like this.”
She paused and turned to face me. Her eyes blazed with fury.
“No.” Her voice came out mean. “Everything is rather in perspective now. It has never been clearer.”
I let go of her hand slowly, keeping my voice calm. “Anna, I know you think I humiliated you, but that’s not the case. You have to try to see reason with me here.”
“There’s no reason to see,” she interrupted. “You made yourself perfectly clear. You have rules. I’m a virgin. Those two things are incompatible. End of story
“Anna
She folded her arms across her chest, her posture defensive. “You want to stick to your rules. Fine. Your rules, your life, your choice. But don’t expect me to wait around hoping you’ll change your mind”
She turned away, reaching for the door handle again.

Chapter 169
I couldn’t let her walk away thinking I didn’t want her.
I grabbed her arm and pulled her back, forcing her to face me.
“Maybe we should pick this up when you’re calmer, I tried. Over dinner, perhaps. We can talk this thro

“I no longer want this arrangement. Her voice shook, but not from weakness. It was rage. “I don’t want to be with a man who makes me feel like I’m not good enough. Like my inexperience is some kind of flaw or burden.”
She wasn’t making this easy.
“I never said you weren’t good enough”
“You didn’t have to Tears threatened again, but she blinked them back furiously
“Your actions said it loud and clear. I offered you everything. My body, my trust, my virginity. And you threw it back in my face because it didn’t fit neatly into your rules”
Her words hit me like physical blows.
She was completely wrong.
She thought I saw her as not good enough, as a burden, when the truth was the exact opposite. She was too precious and valuable to waste on someone like me who couldn’t give her what she deserved.
Overwhelmed, I acted on instinct.
I pulled her to me and kissed her hard and desperate, pouring everything I couldn’t say into the press of my lips against hers. Every ounce of want, need, crushing guilt, and desire tangled together.
She fought me at first. Her hands pushed against my chest and her body went rigid.
But then something shifted. A small sound escaped her throat. Her resistance melted, her hands stopping their push and gripping my shirt instead, pulling me closer.
She kissed me back with all the hurt and anger and confusion swirling between us. When I finally pulled away, we were both breathing hard.
1 cupped her face, forcing her to look at me. “Does that feel like I think you’re not good enough?”
She stared at me for a long moment. Then she shoved me away hard enough that I fell back against the driver’s seat
“Don’t ever kiss me again.” Her voice came out ragged. “It was a mistake. All of it.”
The words cut deeper than anything she had said to me before.
“You don’t mean that.”
“I regret tonight. Everything. And I take it all back.” She reached for the door handle again. This whole thing. I wish it had never happened.
I went still, no words coming.
She opened the door. The interior light flooded the car

Then she looked at me one last time.
“I would never be yours, Roman. Not ever again
She slid out of the car and slammed the door behind her.
