Chapter 47: Ready To Face Him
Anna’s POV
An hour and thirty minutes later, I stood in front of the full-length mirror, and I genuinely didn’t recognize the woman staring back at me.
I’d never worn anything like this. I usually hid in oversized sweaters, jeans, and glasses, feeling invisible, blending into the background.
This dress made me the complete opposite of invisible.
The silver dress fit like it had been custom-made for my body, which, knowing Roman’s obsessive attention to detail, it probably had been. The fabric clung to every curve I had, curves I didn’t even know existed. The plunging neckline put my cleavage on full display in a way that made my cheeks burn. The slit exposed my entire right leg, all the way up to my hip.
My hair had been styled in soft, elegant waves that cascaded over one shoulder. My makeup was dramatic but refined. Smoky eyes that made my green eyes pop, nude lips, a hint of shimmer on my cheekbones that caught the light when I moved.
I looked undeniably sexy.
And it absolutely terrified me.
My hands moved self-consciously to my chest, as if I could somehow cover more skin. The dress exposed so much. My breasts were practically spilling out. My leg. My entire back was bare except for two thin straps.
“Don’t you think it’s a bit too revealing?” I turned to Eva, feeling nervous. “Mr. Blackwood might not like me showing up looking like a…”
I couldn’t finish the sentence. Like a what? A woman trying too hard? Someone desperate for attention?
Eva chuckled warmly and walked over to me, her experienced eyes taking in the full picture.
“Miss Winters, Mr. Blackwood handpicked this dress himself. Every single detail.” She reached out, adjusting the delicate strap on my shoulder with gentle fingers. “And he was absolutely right. You look stunning.” Her smile widened. “He appreciates elegance and sophistication. And you, my dear, are both of those things right now.”
My throat tightened at her words, but then a phrase she’d used echoed in my mind.
“He likes his women…” I repeated slowly, the words tasting bitter. “Women. Plural.”
Jealousy flared inside me, so sudden and intense it shocked me. I turned back to the mirror, but I wasn’t seeing my reflection anymore. I was seeing them. The women who probably wore dresses like this to brunch. Women who knew how to walk in stilettos without wobbling. Women who could match his intensity, his power, his world of luxury and control.
Women who weren’t virgin nerds who spent their free time writing dirty stories about their boss.
“Women?” The word came out sharper than I intended.
I met Eva’s eyes in the mirror. “He brings home multiple women?”
Eva’s expression shifted, suddenly more careful. “I do not meddle in Mr. Blackwood’s personal affairs, Miss Winters.” She placed a hand on my shoulder. “But I can tell you…”
She paused, her eyes meeting mine with unexpected warmth. “In the ten years I’ve worked for him, you’re the first woman he has brought home and let sleep over.”
My heart actually stopped.
“What?” The word barely made it past my lips.
Eva nodded, her smile softening into tenderness that was almost maternal. “Apart from his sister, of course. But yes. You’re the very first.”

Chapter 47: Ready To Face Him
I stared at her, my mind completely blank, trying to process what she’d just said.
The first?
But no. That didn’t make sense. That didn’t necessarily mean anything significant. Just because he didn’t bring women here didn’t mean he wasn’t seeing them. Having sex with them.
“He probably just doesn’t bring them here for security reasons,” I said, trying to sound casual even as my pulse hammered wildly. “You know, hotel rooms are easier. More discreet. Less complicated. No risk of them seeing where he lives or getting attached or…”
“Perhaps,” Eva interrupted gently, her smile turning slightly mysterious, like she knew a secret I didn’t. “But Mr. Blackwood values his privacy above almost everything else, Miss Winters. This penthouse is his sanctuary. His safe haven from the world. He doesn’t let just anyone past these doors. Ever.”
My breath hitched, but I refused to let myself believe I was special. He probably just took them to five-star suites where he could maintain his precious privacy and control. Or maybe he went to their places. God knows he had trust issues. This penthouse was like Fort Knox. Of course he wouldn’t bring random hookups here.
“But he still…” I hesitated, feeling foolish for even asking but unable to stop myself. Heat crept up my neck. “I mean, he still sees women, right? He’s Roman Blackwood. He’s gorgeous, powerful, insanely wealthy. He probably has women throwing themselves at him every single day.”
“I imagine he does,” Eva said diplomatically, her expression neutral.
“So he must have…” I trailed off, not sure how to phrase this without sounding like a jealous teenager. “Does he have a girlfriend? Someone he sees regularly? Someone serious?”
Eva’s expression became even more guarded. “Miss Winters…”
“I’m not trying to pry,” I said quickly, even though that was exactly what I was doing. “I just… I’m trying to understand him. He’s so complicated. One minute he’s cold and controlling and the next…”
I gestured helplessly at the mountain of designer dresses scattered around the room. “Doing things like this. Sending me an entire wardrobe. Letting me stay in his home. I need to know what he wants from me.”
Eva was quiet for a long moment, clearly weighing how much she should say. I could see the internal debate playing out on her face.
“Mr. Blackwood is particular,” she finally said carefully. “About everything. His schedule. His business dealings. His personal life. In all the years I’ve worked for him, I’ve never known him to have a serious relationship. He’s married to his work, really. Completely devoted to it.”
Discomfort shifted in her expression then, like she’d realized she’d said too much.
“Miss Winters.” Eva’s tone was gentle but firm, a clear boundary being drawn. “I’ve already said far more than I should have. What Mr. Blackwood does in his personal time truly isn’t my place to discuss. I could lose my position for speaking out of turn.”
Guilt crashed over me immediately. “You’re right. God, I’m sorry, Eva. I shouldn’t be putting you in this position. That was completely inappropriate of me.”
“It’s alright, dear. I understand the curiosity.” Eva glanced at her watch, and her eyes widened slightly. “But we really must go now. Mr. Blackwood is waiting downstairs, and the car is already here to take you both to the venue. He gets very particular about punctuality.”
My stomach flipped violently.
“He’s waiting downstairs? Right now? As in, he’s been waiting this whole time?”
“?es, miss.” Eva’s smile turned almost mischievous, a knowing glint in her eyes. “And trust me, when he sees
you in this dress, whatever concerns you have will completely disappear.”
My hands trembled as I smoothed them over the silver fabric one more time. The woman in the mirror looked confident. Sexy. Sophisticated. Like she belonged in Roman Blackwood’s world.
Everything I’d never been.

Chapter 47: Ready To Face Him
Everything I’d only ever written about in my novels, living vicariously through characters braver than myself.
I grabbed the silver clutch and matching sequined mask from the dresser, took a deep breath that did nothing to calm my racing heart, and followed Eva toward the door.
Time to face Roman Blackwood.
And God help me, I had absolutely no idea what would happen when he saw me like this.
