Chapter 56: Would You Have Kissed Him
Roman’s POV
Thomas was in the front seat, driving us home. The partition between us and him was up, giving us privacy, but I could still see his silhouette through the tinted glass.
Anna sat beside me, her body angled toward the window, as far from me as the leather seat would allow.
I hadn’t been able to look at her since we left the Beaumont ball. My hands were still trembling, not from fear, but from the effort it took not to turn around and finish what I’d started with Laurent. I’d let my anger get the best of me. I lost control in front of half of New York’s elite society. And worst of all, I’d revealed exactly how much power Anna had over me.
My reflection stared back at me from the darkened window. A deep frown carved into my features, my eyes hard as stone.
But the image that wouldn’t leave me alone was Laurent’s hand on her waist. The way she’d smiled up at him. The way she’d let him hold her.
I turned to face her.
“Anna.” My voice came out rougher than I intended. “I warned you about the rules. No mingling. No fraternizing with clients. And what did you do the second I was in a meeting?”
Her head snapped toward me, eyes wide. Then her teeth caught her lower lip, worrying it in that way that set my entire body on fire. “I can explain. It’s not what you think.”
“Don’t.” I cut her off, my hand slicing through the air. “I watched you for almost an hour, Anna. Do you know what it was like trying to discuss a billion-dollar partnership while I was distracted? Because you were over there with Laurent. I watched you drink scotch with him. I watched him pull you between his thighs like he owned you.”
My voice dropped lower, more dangerous. “How could you throw my warnings back in my face like that?”
“I didn’t mean to.” Her hands twisted together in her lap. “He approached me while you were with his father. He was charming, friendly. I was just being polite.”
“Polite?” Heat surged through my chest. “Or you planned all of this to make me lose my mind.”
Her mouth fell open. “Planned what?”
“The whole charade of dancing with Laurent.”
I leaned closer, my voice rising. “Letting him put his hands all over you. Making sure I could see every second of it from across the room.”
“That’s insane.” She shifted away from me, pressing herself against the car door. “You were in an important meeting with Mr. Maison. I thought there was no harm in accepting one dance. I was networking, building relationships like you’ve told me to do a hundred times before.”
“Networking.” I laughed, the sound bitter “Is that what you call letting a man grind against you on the dance floor?”
Her eyes flashed with anger. “We were dancing. It was completely appropriate.”
“Like hell it was.” I dragged in a breath, trying to rein myself in. Trying to find some thread of control. But when I spoke again, the question came out lower. “Did you enjoy it? His company?”
She went very still. Then her spine straightened, shoulders pulling back in defiance. “Mr. Blackwood, I don’t know what you’re trying to suggest, and I don’t like your tone. Neither do I like where this conversation is going.”
I scoffed. “You have a problem with my tone?” A short, humorless laugh escaped me.
“But you enjoyed his voice, didn’t you?” The words spilled out, driven by images I couldn’t shake. “That smooth French accent whispering in your ear. You didn’t seem to mind when he pulled you flush against him. When

his hand slid lower on your back. When he touched you in ways that should have been reserved for…”
I stopped myself.
Her breathing had quickened. “Reserved for who, Mr. Blackwood?”
I ignored the question. “You let him think you wanted it. That’s why he kept going. That’s why he tried to kiss you.”
“How dare you.” She whirled on me fully now, eyes blazing with fury behind the mask. “You have absolutely no right to speak to me this way. To question me like I’ve done something wrong. Whatever I feel about Laurent’s company, whatever I feel about anyone, is my personal business, not yours.”
“Laurent Beaumont is my client.” Each word came out hard and forceful. “He’s off-limits. You can’t date him. You can’t be his girlfriend. Whatever sweet words he poured in your ear tonight, whatever promises he made, forget them. They’re not happening.”
“That’s not your decision to make.” Her voice rose to match mine. “It’s mine. My life. My choices.”
“Don’t push me, Anna.”
“Or what?” She leaned forward, invading my space, her perfume flooding my senses and making my head spin. “What will you do, Mr. Blackwood? Fire me? Threaten me? You seem to enjoy doing both.”
Something possessive inside me snapped.
My hand shot out, fingers wrapping around her wrist. I yanked her across the seat before she could protest, hauling her onto my lap in one swift motion.
“Mr. Blackwood.” Her palms flattened against my chest, pushing. “What are you…”
“You will not challenge…” My arm locked around her waist, pinning her against me. “Or defy me.”
She squirmed, trying to escape, but the movement only made things worse. Her breasts pressed against my chest, soft and full. Her ass settled directly over my lap, and my body responded instantly, blood rushing south until I was achingly hard beneath her.
“Let me go.” Her voice shook. “This is completely inappropriate.”
“Answer my question first.” My hand slid from her waist down to her hip, then lower, cupping the curve of her ass through the dress.
I pulled her down harder against me, letting her feel exactly what she did to me. The thick ridge of my erection pressed against her core, separated only by thin layers of fabric. “Were you going to let him kiss you?”
Her eyes widened. I felt her breath catch, saw the rapid pulse jumping in her throat.
“I…” She swallowed hard. “That’s not…”
“Yes or no, Anna.” My grip tightened on her ass, fingers digging into the soft flesh possessively.
My other hand came up to cup her jaw, tilting her face toward mine. Our lips were inches apart, our breath mingling. “If I hadn’t interrupted, would you have let Laurent Beaumont’s mouth touch yours?”
“I…” Her voice came out breathy now, her body betraying her even as she tried to maintain defiance. “I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?” The words came out as a growl. My thumb traced her lower lip, the same lip she’d been biting moments ago. I wanted to bite it myself. Wanted to taste her again like I had in that dressing room. Wanted to devour her completely. “Let me make something very clear. You don’t get to not know when it comes to other men touching you.”
Her hands pressed harder against my chest, but she wasn’t pushing anymore. Just resting there, her fingers curling slightly into my jacket as if she was fighting the urge to pull me closer. “You can’t tell me what to do.”
“Can’t I?” I shifted beneath her, my hips rolling up slightly, grinding against her in a way that made her gasp.” Your body seems to disagree.”
“This is…” She bit her lip, and I nearly lost what little control I had left. “We’re in a car. Thomas is right there.”

“I don’t give a damn if Thomas can see or hear us.” My hand slid higher on her thigh, bunching the dress up
around her hips. “I need to know, Anna. Would you have let him kiss you?”
