Chapter 64: Leaving was the only option

Chapter 64: Leaving was the only option

Anna’s POV

I slammed the closet door open and grabbed an armful of clothes.

“Professional boundaries.”

The words left my lips like a scoff. I shoved dresses into the suitcase, hangers clattering to the floor. I bent down to gather them, my hands moving on autopilot.

I chuckled at the absurdity of it all.

Maybe he should have thought about that before he…

Hell.

I squeezed my eyes shut, fighting to push away the thought that had plagued me all day. The way his fingers felt, stroking me, claiming me. I had been fighting it since I woke up. Every time I tried to focus on work, the memory surfaced. His voice in my ear. The heat of his breath on my neck. The way he made me fall apart. And that was exactly why I had to leave. There was no way I could keep living under the same roof, tormented by what happened. Every time I walked through that elevator, I would remember. Every hallway, every corner of this house would be a reminder of the night he made me believe he wanted me.

Leaving was the only option.

I ditched work early and slipped out before anyone could ask questions. My phone sat on the dresser,

powered off. I did not want Roman calling. I did not want him tracking me down before I could get out. I had maybe an hour, maybe less, before he noticed my absence.

And if he found out what I was doing, he would do everything in his power to make me stay.

This was the only way. Leave without him knowing.

This was what he wanted. Professional. Distant. He could have it.

My hands trembled as I yanked more outfits off hangers and tossed them into the case without bothering to fold them properly. I felt bad. Eva had organized this closet so carefully, and now I was destroying it. But it was not my fault. This was how it had to be.

I was done with Roman’s mixed signals. Done with his games.

One minute, he was following me into a dangerous strip club, putting himself at risk to rescue me from Drago. The next, he was buying me an entire wardrobe like it was nothing. And then the masquerade ball. God, the masquerade ball. He picked out my dress himself, made me stand before the mirror while he told me I was the most beautiful woman there. He had been jealous of Laurent. Possessive. And then he kissed me like I was the only thing that mattered.

Damn. It was all too confusing..

I had thought, finally, maybe he felt what I had been feeling all month. Maybe this thing between us was real. But I was wrong. Or maybe I was not, and he was just too much of a coward to face it. Either way, staying would only make it worse. Men like Roman did not just break hearts, they crushed them. Leaving now, while I still could, was the smart choice.

I grabbed the last of my things and turned to face the damage. Three suitcases. All packed.

The irony burned. I had arrived here with nothing but the clothes on my back, and now I was leaving with enough designer pieces to fill a boutique.

I had thought it meant he cared.

God, I am an idiot.

I found a notepad in the nightstand and pulled out a pen. My hand moved across the page, scribbling everything that was in my heart. It was short. A little sarcastic But it said what needed to be said.

I placed the pen on top of the paper and set it on the nightstand where I knew he would see it.

I looked around the room one last time. In just a few days, this beautiful space had become my safe haven. I would miss it. The soft lighting, the view from the window, the way everything felt calm here.

But I could not stay.

I sucked in a deep breath and grabbed the handle of the first suitcase. Time to go.

The first suitcase bumped down the stairs, wheels catching on every step. My arms burned by the time I wrestled it to the landing. I paused, wiping my forehead with the back of my hand.

“Ms. Winters?”

I froze halfway down with the second case.

Eva stood at the bottom of the stairs, eyes wide.

“What are you doing?”

This was the last thing I needed. But moving these cases down the endless staircase was not exactly quiet. “Just moving some things.” I forced a smile and continued down.

She stepped into my path, gesturing at the suitcases. “Does Mr. Blackwood know about all of this?”

“Of course.” The words left my mouth before I could think.

Her eyebrows drew together. “He did not mention anything to me.”

“It was last minute.” I set the suitcase down, catching my breath. “He has been swamped with the Beaumont deal. I am sure that is why he forgot to inform you.”

Eva reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

“I should call him.”

“No.” I closed the distance between us, my hands covering hers and stopping her. “He is closing a major deal right now. If we interrupt, it could mess up the whole negotiation. You know how important this is to him.”

“But Ms. Winters, I still think I can drop a message. At least that way…”

I met her gaze, putting as much innocence into my expression as I could manage.

“Really, Eva. He knows. Everything is arranged.” I let go of her hand slowly as she looked at me with suspicion. “I just need to get these downstairs.”

She placed her phone back in her pocket. “I guess I will let him be, since he is aware. But…”

She reached for her phone again.

“You will not mind if I arrange a driver. And help with your luggage.”

“That is not necessary…”

“Mr. Blackwood would be furious if I let you leave on your own with all this.” She dialed a number. It started ringing. “It is no trouble.”

The look on her face said there was no arguing. She stepped away, phone to her ear, and I caught fragments of her conversation.

“Ms. Winters needs assistance right away.”

She returned to me, tucking her phone away.

“Zion will be here shortly.”

“Thank you.”

I smiled. Inside, I was panicking.

I reached for the handle of another case. “Let me finish getting this one down at least.”

Eva’s hand shot out. “Ms. Winters, please. No heavy lifting. Mr. Blackwood left strict instructions. You are not to lift a finger to do any form of work in this home.”

Of course he controlled everything, even in his absence.

I could not help the retort that slipped out. “I am sure he does that for all his lady friends.”

Eva’s expression softened. “Ms. Winters, you already know you are the only one he has brought home. Just a moment, Zion will be here. I suggest you go down and take a seat.”

My heart raced. I did not understand the urgency in her tone, but something about it made me nervous.

What if she did call Roman? What if he was already on his way back?

Twenty minutes later, my suitcases were loaded into a town car. I slid into the back seat, my body sinking into the leather. Through the window, I watched Eva standing in the doorway. She raised her hand in a slow wave, her face etched with concern.

I lifted my hand weakly, returning the gesture as the car pulled away from the curb.

Half an hour later, I stood outside Zoe’s apartment door, suitcases lined up behind me.

I knocked twice.

After a minute, the door flew open.

Zoe’s face went from shock to pure joy in half a second.
