In Esmond's world, he had always been the one others disappointed. When had he ever cared about the expectations of a discarded pawn?
Now that he finally had solid confirmation and had even gathered fresh data from the side effects ravaging Regina's body, Esmond immediately went back to report to the boss and await his next instructions.
"So it really is in that girl's hands. I suspected as much. We just never had concrete proof."
The man behind the scenes looked unsurprised, as if he had seen through everything long ago, carrying himself with an airy, all-knowing composure.
"Yes. Should we send people to take it back?" Esmond asked respectfully.
His posture and tone now were nothing like the way he had spoken to Regina.
In front of this man, he was the picture of deference.
"Amelia isn't like everyone else. It won't be that easy to snatch it. We probably don't even know where she's hiding it."
The man seemed unusually familiar with Amelia, certain she had concealed the item too well to be easily discovered.
Sending people to grab it in broad daylight, or sneaking into her home to search in secret—both were bad options.
There was a high chance she would notice and be alerted.
"Once she senses our intentions, with her personality, she'll either hide it even deeper … or destroy it outright."
A trace of wariness slipped into his voice as his fingers tapped lightly against the desk in a steady rhythm.
"And we need to retrieve it—or destroy it—quickly. If she manages to reverse-engineer the formula or improve it, all the experiments we've conducted so far will be for nothing."
He was genuinely wary of Amelia, knowing she was a rare genius—especially in pharmaceutical research, where few could rival her.
Esmond frowned slightly, confused. "So … what are you saying, Boss?"
He truly couldn't see a way to get something from someone as sharp as Amelia if they couldn't steal it or search for it.
"Steal? That's too crude." The man chuckled softly, calm and calculating. "Just bring the person here."
"You mean kidnap Amelia directly?"
"Mm. Don't forget, she has Jeremy behind her."
That man was no easy target either, having perfectly inherited the strengths of Whitney and Hendrick.
He wasn't someone to underestimate.
Unfortunately for him, Jeremy was hopelessly in love—just like his short-lived father.
Back then, if Hendrick hadn't been so devoted to Whitney, capturing him wouldn't have been nearly so easy.
And Jeremy had clearly inherited that same weakness from his father.
