Once Yuan entered the Supreme General’s living quarters, the latter closed the door behind him and said, "Start from the beginning."
Yuan nodded and recounted everything that had happened while he was outside the city, omitting a few details, such as his use of Void Manipulation to interrogate the offenders.
He then placed the device he acquired from Second Shadow onto the table.
"This is evidence that I was targeted."
The Supreme General picked up the device and looked through the evidence, raising an eyebrow when he saw the photo Second Shadow used to prove Yuan’s death.
"How does this photo of you prove your death? It looks like you’re just sleeping to me," said the Supreme General.
"They tried to poison me."
"If that’s true, how did you survive the poison? Don’t tell me that you always walk around with antidotes or something?"
Yuan smiled and said, "Of course not. My body is naturally resilient to poison."
The Supreme General did not doubt him because he was already confirmed to have the Perfected Heavenly Refinement physique.
After going through all of the evidence, the Supreme General put the device back down and said, "You’re right. There isn’t any evidence in here that can identify the ones who paid for your assassination."
"What if I say that I already know who they are?" Yuan asked.
"Are you going to say it was the Gu Family?" the Supreme General asked calmly, as though he were already aware of the situation.
"So you already knew, huh?"
"There’s nothing that happens within my military that I don’t know about," he sneered.
"Then why haven’t you done anything? Is it because you’re suspicious of me?" Yuan asked.
The Supreme General narrowed his eyes at him and replied, "It has nothing to do with you. There are rules that must be followed, and unless we can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they’re guilty, there’s nothing we can do, even if we are convinced of their guilt."
"Doesn’t that just enable people to deliberately exploit the loophole?" Yuan asked, shaking his head.
"I won’t comment any further on the military’s rules, since they were established long before I came into power," the Supreme General said.
"So I just need evidence, right? I plan on using this device to do so."
"If you intend to use it to lure them out, it won’t work. They can simply turn it around and use it as a defense instead. It’s called entrapment, and there have been precedents for that as well."
Yuan was speechless at this point.
"So you’re telling me to just sit around and wait until they successfully kill me after countless attempts because nobody can prove it’s them. Sometimes, such rules only benefit the powerful."
"Or, you can catch them in the act and find evidence—"
"Not everyone has the time for that." Yuan interrupted.
After saying that, Yuan turned around and walked to the exit.
"What are you going to do?" The Supreme General asked.
"Why bother asking when there appears to be nothing that I can do?"
