Chapter 25 Sensitive Child
Elina let out a cold laugh. “So now that you think you’re off the hook, you’re coming to me?”
Her voice carried a chill that made Lisa freeze for a second.
“No, ma’am! It’s just… this past week, my conscience has been eating away at me. Whether or not it was really my fault that Jaslyn suffered so much, I’m willing to go to the police and tell them everything. I’ll turn myself in.”
“Then why are you calling me?” Elina’s voice was calm, almost detached. “You should be going straight to the police.”
Lisa kept crying, her voice full of desperation. “I just wanted to know how Jaslyn is doing. I know I was wrong, but I can’t stop worrying about her.”
After all these years, Lisa knew exactly how Elina had treated her. Elina said, “She’s fine. You should go turn yourself in.”
She hung up, set her phone aside, and stared blankly ahead, her mind drifting. Her phone rang again, pulling her out of her thoughts. Thinking it was Lisa again, she was about to hang up when she saw it was [aslyn’s kindergarten teacher.
After a moment’s hesitation, she picked up. “Mrs. Mansor, I’m sorry to bother you,” the teacher said politely. “But there’s something about Jaslyn that I felt I had to let you know.”
Elina pressed her lips together. “Ms. Jane, I’m quite busy with work these days and don’t usually handle
aslyn’s pickup and drop-off. If there’s anything, you should speak with her father.”
Yes,” Ms. Jane said, sounding a little uncomfortable. “Actually, what I wanted to tell you is about her father.”
Elina frowned slightly, listening as the teacher explained what had happened that afternoon.
Usually, Elina or Lisa picked Jaslyn up early, among the first three parents. But today, not only was Jaslyn he last one left, she even had to stay for the aftercare program for an extra hour.
It wasn’t until Ms. Jane called Jack that he finally showed up, long after school ended.
By then, Jaslyn had cried herself nearly breathless. When she didn’t see the mom she kept asking for, she cried even harder.
Elina cut her off. “They won’t treat it seriously. The hospital has already closed the case, and Jaslyn is fine. But Lisa, if you really feel guilty, then once you’ve dealt with everything, go back to the Mansor family and take care of Jaslyn.”
For a moment, silence fell on both ends of the line.
“You’re… you’re still willing to give me a chance?” Lisa asked, her voice thick with emotion.
Elina neither confirmed nor denied it. “That way, you’ll feel better about yourself, right?”
“But…” Lisa hesitated, then sighed. “If Mr. Mansor finds out what happened, he’ll never let me come back.”
“Don’t worry,” Elina said. “As long as you don’t bring it up, and I don’t bring it up, Elowyn certainly won’t dare mention that my mother paid you to run away. You’ll be fine.”
The family must be a total mess right now. Even back at the hospital, Elina had already heard about Jaslyn chasing away another nanny. No matter how many nannies Jack tried to hire, for a sensitive child like Jaslyn, it wasn’t going to be easy to find someone she trusted.
