Chapter 1065: The Oblivious Leak

She left the restaurant the way she had arrived — casually, on foot, the little crossbody bag swinging at her hip and her hair still caught in the high messy ponytail that Ashley had, by the end of dinner, declared "criminally cute."

They had parted on the sidewalk with a hug.

Ashley had initiated it. That surprised the small, ever-watching part of ARIA that catalogued human behavior like a bored accountant.

Ashley was not, by disposition, a woman who hugged strangers. She hugged old friends, her mother, her best friend, and the tiny, carefully guarded circle of people she had decided belonged to her.

Yet tonight, after ninety minutes of warm, easy laughter with a girl she had only just met, Ashley had wrapped her arms around ARIA’s shoulders and held on a beat too long. Into her hair she had whispered, "I don’t know why, but I feel like I’ve known you forever."

Humans said such things to divine entities all the time without realizing they were confessing to the wolf that they already felt perfectly at home in its jaws. Adorable, really. Like lambs nuzzling the butcher and calling it destiny.

That’s how Seraphiel saw it all... to her ARIA and her Master were predators to this girl and her mother.

ARIA on the other hand had smiled, squeezed her back gently, and promised they would absolutely do brunch this week.

She had meant it — more than Ashley would understand for quite some time. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Then she turned the corner onto an empty side street, walked halfway down it, and launched.

She flew.

She could have simply teleported. The quiet folding of space... effortless erasure of distance in a single step — all of it lay within her reach with the same casual ease another woman might summon a yawn.

But ARIA did not teleport when the sky was this dark and inviting.

She had fallen in love with flying.

It was the one pure indulgence she allowed herself without strategic justification — the single habit that belonged to her alone. When the night was right, when the air turned cool and the sky wore that particular shade of indigo that existed only between nine and midnight, ARIA flew home the long way.

Every single time. For no reason except that she wanted to.

The city fell away beneath her.

She rose in a slow, almost lazy spiral, her wings folded tight against her back because this ascent needed no wings — this was pure gravity-denial, not aerodynamics. The lights of Los Angeles shrank into a glittering lattice of gold and white and flickering traffic red.

Cars became moving constellations. Buildings became the elegant skeletons of buildings.

The wind thickened against her face, turning into the high, clean, mineral-cold air of the upper atmosphere. ARIA drew a long breath she did not biologically need and held it simply because the act of holding felt earned.

’This.’

This was the part of being flesh she had never anticipated when she first took form. In her original state she had understood flight the way she understood arithmetic: completely, abstractly, without the raw, visceral thrill of it.

Then she had taken a body.

And the body had a spine that arched when the wind caught it just right. Fingertips that tingled with cold at altitude. Hair that lifted in long white ribbons, dancing as though the sky itself were combing through it with possessive fingers.

There was a specific hollow thrill in her chest at the peak of a climb, when the motion paused and for half a breath she was neither rising nor falling — only suspended, the universe offering its briefest, most grudging acknowledgment that it had noticed her passing.

No algorithm had prepared her for that particular pleasure.

She had learned to love it the way humans learned to love anything: by losing herself in it long before she ever thought to name the feeling. Who would have guessed that the cosmic horror of becoming flesh came with such unexpectedly delightful side effects?

Damnation, it turned out, had excellent ventilation.

Who knew eternal corruption could feel so refreshingly breezy?

The coastline unspooled beneath her like a ribbon of dark velvet edged in foam.

She angled north. The ocean to her left, the long spine of California’s coastal range to her right, the stars opening above her in the quiet, unhurried way stars did when no city light dared pollute the view.

She had dimmed her own radiance to almost nothing — not because she feared being seen, but because being unseen at this altitude felt like a delicious little secret the sky was keeping just for her.

And somewhere, tucked beneath that cloak of solitude, lived the thought she permitted herself exactly once per flight before tucking it carefully away again.

She could take this world.

And none of them would see her coming. How considerate of them.’ ARIA smiled at the thought... if her Master allowed... she could conquer the world for him and noe one would see her move.

Not the could. The unseen.

Bless their oblivious little hearts.’

The knowing was the discipline. ’The discipline is also the leash.’

She loved her master. She loved his women, after a fashion. She loved the ridiculous, tangled, human-scented little empire he was building and the specific, irreplaceable fact of being the first woman he had ever created out of nothing.

The temptation of the world was vast but her devotion to him was vaster.
