"I'm sure she is," he says. "And the next time she insults you, you should knock her lights out. But you of all people should know you can't make people be faithful. They either are, or they aren't."
I sigh. I already know where this is going... My ex.
Michael looks into my eyes with that look. "If someone wants to cheat, they'll find a way. If it's not a Suzie," he says. "It'll be a Natasha. Or a Jasmin. Or a whoever that third girl was."
I frown, thinking of guitar boy. 'A song just for us' my ass. Michael had to beat the crap out of him on Valentine's Day just so I didn't kill him myself. That boy...
He was four timing us. That's right. Four girls at the same time, and then he was stupid enough to mix up our Valentine's Day cards. He couldn't even find mine after I pointed out that he gave me the wrong card. In front of my family.
"The point is," Michael says. "Carson being faithful has nothing to do with you, and it's got nothing to do with Suzie for that matter."
"But what if?" I ask. "Even if it's not my fault, what if one day he does cheat?"
Michael shrugs. "I don't know... At least you still have two more replicas of him?"
I shove him. "Michael."
He swats me away. "Okay, okay. Sorry," he laughs. "But seriously. Has he given you a reason to be suspicious?"
I shake my head. "No."
And I mean it. Despite all of my fears at the beginning of him being a fuckboy, Carson's been great. It's just... This thought in the back of my mind. This feeling I can't shake off.
"Well if he hasn't given you a reason to doubt him, maybe all of this anger you feel towards Suzie isn't really about her," Michael says. "Maybe it's just the unresolved issues you have from your past relationship."
I think about how messy the breakup was with my ex. The hurt feelings. The other girls and the blame games they tried. It was all so ridiculous.
"Those girls tried to fight you over your ex even when you didn't want to fight them," Michael says. "So maybe now you think you need to fight this girl, Suzie, even though you really don't. Maybe you just have trust issues you need to work through, either with Carson, or his brothers, or on your own, or with a counselor." He sits up. "Either way, being angry at this girl and preventing yourself from getting the answers you need isn't gonna help anyone." And on that note, Michael rips the paper up.
My eyes fly open. "Wait." I reach towards the scraps.
He raises an eyebrow.
"We might need that for later," I say incredulously. "I still have so many questions."
"You want me to help you with that too?" he asks.
"Now...?" He throws his robe off, revealing his pokemon pjs. He crawls under his sheets with tired eyes, yawning. "Now we go to sleep, Mia. Get out of my room."
What's this? What is he, a grandpa? "What happened to figuring everything out?" I ask.
"The only thing to figure out is you swallowing your pride and getting the information we need from that girl," he mutters, rolling over.
I roll my eyes. "Well, what happened to your burning desire to know what was going on?" He's just gonna go to sleep on me?
He waves his hand slowly. "It died when I was reassured that you weren't being finagled by two strange men in our backyard."
"I could still be killed by the Bloodmoon Pack," I say firmly.
"And?" He rubs his eyes.
I stare at him incredulously.
He sighs, forcefully. His eyes look bloodshot and he's got bags the size of Texas. "Look, Mia." He pushes up onto his forearms. "I get that war is coming." He waves his hands. "And the enemy is basically knocking at our doorstep, but thankfully... the invasion isn't happening right now. So we've gotta sleep."
