Ditched Cheating Alpha, I Led My Daughter to Life's Peak novel Chapter 191

I'm about to ask her what's going on, but Michael points towards the door with one hand, holding the pillow against his head with the other.

"Ethel and Onai are waiting for you at Town Hall. We'll take you to them," Bri explains without me having to prompt her. "But you kind of need to hurry up, because-"

Suddenly Krys is all I hear. "Is she getting up?"

I flinch. I've never heard her sound so angry.

"Yeah, she's getting up," Brittany says nervously, holding the speaker away from her face.

They're both just background noise by the point Krys says, "Let me talk to her."

"No," Bri says quickly. "She's coming. I said she's coming."

I hear some rustling, then, again it's just Krys. She's screaming so loud I think I can hear her from outside. "Mia, if you don't get your sleeping beauty butt up right now-"

Click.

Needless to say, I get ready quickly.

I take the fastest shower known to man, brush my teeth, throw something on, decide I'll have to find something to eat while I'm out, and run back to Michael's room.

"Michael," I shout out.

He pops up, looking only half-way conscious. "What?"

"I'm going out. Cover for me."

"What?" That wakes him up. "Where are you going? Who are you going with?"

"Krys and Bri, then Onai and Ethel. Tell Mom and Dad it was something school related. Be vague." I run out of the door and towards the stairs.

He's already blocking my way, once again, wrapped head to toe in his robe. "You march right back into your room, young lady."

Omg. "I literally don't have time for this."

"I bet you don't," he says. "But I don't have time to file a missing person report, so make time."

I rub my forehead, imagining Krys breaking through the front door with a face mask that she claims I 'forced her to use because of the bags she's getting from watching me.'

Michael doesn't seem to have any form of haste. "I just don't understand why you're going out with those two. Alone. Again."

"Because they're my friends," I say.

He scoffs. "You said that about the brothers."

"Well, you're the one who said I needed to talk to Suzie," I remind him.

"Yeah, Suzie. Not them," he points towards the door as if the two male betas were out there themselves.

"Well... Well you guys are always arguing," I point out.

He raises an eyebrow. "Okay, and...?"

I don't know. I frown. I mean, I know for a fact that Onai likes Michael, but the arguing is all the proof I have for the reverse. Maybe I didn't think this through well enough. Did I imagine the chemistry? Uh oh. "That's all I've got," I say.

He laughs a bit. "You've got a strange idea of love, Mia." He stands up again firmly. "It's gotta be a little more than arguing in my opinion. There needs to be..." He waves his hand. "You know?"

"And you don't think you two have it?" I ask.

He shakes his head. "I think I just get on his nerves."

I pull my phone out for just a moment to silence the umpteenth call I've gotten from both Bri and Krys. I look back at Michael. "So the fact that he's a guy... isn't the problem?" I ask.

He seems to catch himself, answering quickly, "I didn't say that. I just thought we were talking about personality-wise."

"Oh," I say. "So him being a guy is a problem?" I'm just trying to understand.

It takes longer for him to answer that one. "I didn't really say that either." He looks a little less comfortable now, even though he's trying to hide it with a playful demeanor. Shoulders back, head up, seemingly relaxed. All the signs of confidence, except he's got none right now.

I can tell.

I try not to push. He doesn't have to tell me anything if he doesn't want to, but I do want to show him that he can tell me if that's the case. It's one of those situations where you don't know what the right thing to say is. And on top of the fact that I really need to go, it's just a messy situation. But this is too important to rush. I settle on, "So what are you saying, Michael?"
