"So," we say at the same time. We look at each other, laughing, hesitantly. "You can-" Pause.
I sit back, getting a little more comfortable. "Go ahead. Really."
"No, you go ahead." He smiles, but I insist he speaks first, so he does. "What did you want to talk about?" he asks. It's a predictable question with a not so predictable answer.
I stare into his eyes. There are a lot of ways I could go about this. I could ask right away,or I could question him slowly. Carefully. "As a human," I start. "There are a lot of things I wonder about."
He nods, encouraging me to keep continue.
I do. "Something that's been bothering me I guess..." I can't find the words. Okay, f it. Here we go.
I try to pretend like I'm in control. Like I'm asking what I'm supposed to be asking. I can't give him any indication that he's aiding in a conspiracy. At least not yet.
"I guess what I'm trying to say is, I want to learn more about what's going on with the borders." I add, "In regard to this division."
"The borders?" he asks.
I nod. "Like with the recent refugee situation."
He gives me a blank look.
I add some vague details for credibility. "I mean, I won't go into detail for obvious reasons but..."
The easygoing expression falls from his face. He's all business now, hard features. "You want to know the role this division played in the... recent refugee situation?"
I nod.
He stays quiet.
I clear my throat, crossing my legs.
"The most recent refugee situation?" he repeats.
I stick to what I said. Even if I'm wrong, I'll be consistent. "Yes, the incident with the insubordination." I repeat what I heard Coach Kenet say about jt.
"Ah." He nods to himself. "The incident about a week ago."
I nod.
He looks into my eyes, unflinching. "I was surprised about Alpha Axel's order too."
Axel? I try not to look surprised. "Yeah." I shake my head. "The entire thing was a blur for me. I could barely believe it." I push my twists out of my face. "That's why." I swallow the lump growing in my throat.
Keep it together, Mia. You're right there.
I look into his eyes. "To truly understand all of the angles of what happened, and the impact it had on this division, I'd like you to give me a rundown of the day from your perspective." I nod, all official like.
He nods all official like, rubbing his chin. "So, if I'm understanding this correctly." He leans closer, lowering his voice.
I look at him apprehensively.
"Oh, don't worry about that." He gives me a wary look. "I don't want anyone to know we had this conversation. In fact," he chuckles in a way that doesn't sound humored at all. "I don't want to be having this conversation anymore."
I wish I could believe him, but I can't. I stand in his way. "Just tell me if the brothers sent the refugees away or not."
He doesn't answer.
"Just tell me," I say. I have to get something out of this.
He tries to walk past me, but I threaten him. "I'll..." I look around. "I'll hug you!"
"Hug me?" He furrows his brow.
I nod, waving my arms. "Exactly. I'll hug you. So one more step, and you'll have worse problems than me."
"I don't even get what you're-" he starts.
"If I get my scent on you, Carson'll know and..." I don't even have to finish.
His eyes widen. "Are you crazy?"
"I just might be." I reach my arms over to hug him.
He flinches. "Okay, okay. Watch where you're swinging those things."
"Did the brothers send the refugees away or not?" I narrow my eyes.
