Axel puts his hand over the phone. "Mia."

I look up. Shen does too.

"Why don't you and Onai find some food for them?" he asks.

"Good idea," I nod. I look at Shen. "Are you guys allergic to anything?"

She shakes her head. "Just the usual werewolf stuff." I don't know what that means, but okay. I follow Onai to the kitchen. He lets me go first.

Shen gets up, holding Fei. "Can I come with you?" she asks.

I open my mouth.

Onai stands in the way. "...Your leg," he reminds her.

She looks at it, shrugging it off. "The kitchen's right there."

"That's a pretty fast recovery." It's like he doesn't even hear her.

She furrows her brow. "It was a long way here." She watches him.

Axel decides to defuse the situation, thankfully. "You should just stay here, Shen. Tell Mia and Onai what you want, and they'll get it."

After a long pause, she looks away from Onai. "Okay." She sits as far away from Axel as possible, pulling the blanket around her and Fei.

"You can move to the couch," Axel offers. "If you don't think she'll destroy it."

Shen doesn't say anything.

Axel's amber eyes connect with mine. I don't know what to say.

I follow Onai into the kitchen, giving him a hard look. "If you think you're making things better," I start, because whatever quasi peace was achieved in the forest clearly died there.

He starts pulling drawers open haphazardly, until he finds what he's looking for. My eyes widen.

Thankfully, it's just a pen. I hold my heart.

He grabs a stray receipt, scrawling all over it. His scratchy handwriting reads, 'Do you trust her?' It's messy from the speed he wrote it.

Before I can say anything, he adds, 'Family?' with a big question mark. He points to himself, raising an eyebrow.

I nod. Yes, I see him as family.

He points in the direction Shen's in. He draws a line through the word 'trust' again. And again. And again.

"Okay, I get it," I say. He doesn't trust her. My family member doesn't trust her.

'If you don't know.' He looks into my eyes. 'Don't risk our lives.' He points towards the door. I know what the door is. It's the border. It's throwing them out. It's the possibility of them dying.

I know I shouldn't be risking everyone's lives like this, but that's just the thing. I take the pen, flipping the receipt over. I write through the gashes he created on the front. 'I know it's not adding up. But she got in. How?'

He waves me off. I keep writing, even though the receipt is running out of space. 'She has answers. If we throw her out, she'll just come back in. And she won't trust us anymore.'

He pulls out another receipt. My eyes widen when I see the words he writes, blotchy from the force.

'... We weren't gonna throw her out.'

He can't be stopped.

"Mia?" Axel calls from the other room.

"Yeah?" I ask.

"Do you guys need help?" He stands in the entryway of the kitchen.

Onai's already thrown away the receipts, so he leans against the counter, unassumingly. I'm shocked. He's a double agent.

I imitate his demeanor, shrugging easily. I look through the fridge. It's 90% meat. "We just can't agree on what to feed them," I say. "Wolf versus human diets."

Onai glares at me. I smirk at him while he searches through the pantry.

Axel watches us for a long time before disappearing into the living room. "Okay, just hurry a bit. They're hungry."

For all of Onai's questions and grumbles, the first thing he brings Shen is applesauce. He's Fei's best friend now.

"She's adorable, like you said." I smile as Fei gobbles down applesauce, dropping more of it than not.

"Yeah..." Shen smiles, tightly. "But she talks weird."

I raise an eyebrow.

Shen takes the spoon from the little girl, wrestling it from her grasp.

"Wan'ore." Fei grabs the utensil.
