Ditched Cheating Alpha, I Led My Daughter to Life's Peak novel Chapter 300

The doctor watches him cautiously. I do the same. Finally, she says, "I couldn't agree more. I don't want to talk to the elders any more than you do." There's some sassiness in that statement.

She grabs the bag next to her and turns towards the door. Onai's dad watches her while she does it, and for a moment-just a moment-she watches him too. Then she looks away. "I'll be leaving then. Call me if anything changes." I don't know if she's talking to us or him. Either way, she grabs a few more bags on her way out.

Ethel tells her not to. "Leave them. I've got it."

"Are you sure?" she asks.

He nods.

"Thanks." She grabs as much as she can before taking him up on his offer. When she reaches the doorway, though, her feet stop. Her body pauses in the space, shoulders turning so that she can peer back at me. "Oh, and Luna."

I meet her eyes. The brothers seem tense.

"I thought you should know. There are a few things that happen when a werewolf becomes a luna."

I furrow my brow.

"Mia's not a werewolf," Carson says.

"Still." The doctor keeps her eyes on me. "She should know, shouldn't she? Just in case."

"Just in case what?" Aiden asks.

The doctor shrugs. "Life? A potential disaster? Her actually having any of these abilities?"

"What's she talking about?" I ask.

Axel meets my eyes, giving me a reassuring look. "It's nothing." He turns to the doctor. "She's just talking about scent changes and mindlink attachments."

"Stuff you wouldn't have." Carson glares at Dr. Janice.

"What about persuading pack members?" she asks. "Creating trust among the ranks? Developing the ability to help people find their imprints?"

"That's a lie." Aiden looks disgusted.

The doctor raises an eyebrow. "Is it?"

"Yes," he says firmly.

She scoffs. "The proof is right here. Ethel. Shen. The closer one gets to the luna, the-"

"-closer they'll get to their imprint," Aiden says sarcastically. "Yeah, I heard the folktales too. They're just superstition."

"Are they?"

"Yes," he says again.

She looks between Ethel and Shen before stepping out of the cottage. "Some of those superstitions might help you with the toddler, Luna. I just thought you should know." On that note, she disappears into the forest, closing the front door behind her.

"You don't actually think...?" Axel asks once the room's settled.

Aiden shakes his head. "Of course not."

"But what if?" Carson asks.

"What if what?" I ask.

"The doctor thinks there's a way to deal with the mindlink," Axel says.

My shoulders lift.

Aiden kills it instantly. "But we don't have time for nonsense (read: bs). We need to focus on the task at hand."

"That's what I'm doing." I look at Fei knocked out from the medicine in Shen's arms. I look at Shen, too, meeting her worried gaze. "If the doctor has a plan that could help," I say. "I don't see why we're not discussing it."

"Because we already have a plan," Aiden says.

Uh oh. I don't even want to hear his plan.

'That's what you think,' his eyes scream.

"Guys." I turn to the others, because Aiden's a lost cause. "All in favor of throwing Shen in prison to rot and die 'comfortably,' please raise your hand."

Aiden raises his hand.

"Besides Aiden." I get up and pull his hand down. He wrestles against me, but I hold it in a death grip.

"How is this fair?" he asks.

"Because nobody else is raising their hand," I say.

He lifts his chin. "Well, we can't let her roam around."

"We won't," I say. "She can have a guard, like-"

"-a prisoner?" Ethel gasps.

My face falls.

He falters. "What?"

"I was going to say, like me," I sob.

His eyes widen.

I frown.

He stammers, "I didn't mean-"

I look away.

"It's different with you." He gets up, waving his hands frantically. "We're just doing it for your protection."
