Ditched Cheating Alpha, I Led My Daughter to Life's Peak novel Chapter 309

And right now, Michael not explaining himself is annoying the heck out of Onai. "What's wrong with you?"

"I'll tell you later," Michael says.

"Why not now?" Onai tries to look Michael in the eyes, but my stubborn brother looks way.

Onai furrows his brow even more, questioningly. I know why. It's a werewolf thing, and it's worse with Onai for obvious reasons. Looking one of them in the eyes is a challenge. Looking away is submission. Michael looked away from Onai, submitting to him in the process, but he's still refusing to give Onai his answer.

I do this to Aiden all the time, and it drives him insane.

Michael scratches the back of his neck, looking everywhere but at the beta standing over him. "It's nothing. Really." Before Onai can say anything else, Michael adds, "Your shift is about to start, isn't it?"

Onai takes that the completely wrong way. "Fine." He straightens up, turning away from Michael. His dark brown eyes sweep the room. "I'm going. Remember that until the brothers come back, nobody leaves. Don't kill each other. And watch what you let Fei see."

"I didn't mean it like that." Michael grabs his arm.

Onai tugs it free and keeps walking. "It's fine."

"You're not listening." Michael gets up and follows him to the back door. All our eyes follow them, staring with rapt attention. Suzie, Krys, Ethel, and I lean closer to hear what they're saying-even though the others are werewolves and I can hear them just fine.

Michael drags his feet in front of the door before Onai can open it. "Here's the thing..."

Onai stares down at him.

Michael looks up. "You said your dad wanted to have dinner with us, right?"

Onai nods, slowly.

"Well." Michael shoves his hands into his pockets. "Mia's gonna ask the brothers to come to dinner tomorrow. At our house... With our parents."

"So I've heard," Onai says.

"It's probably gonna get a little... crazy," Michael chuckles more to himself.

Onai nods. "Probably."

"Oh my god, wake up and smell the invitation," Suzie whispers.

Ethel nods, keeping his eyes on the two.

Michael sighs. "I mean, maybe Axel might need some backup...?"

"Axel?" Onai seems to think for a second. "No, I think he can take care of himself."

"This guy," Shen whispers.

My thoughts exactly. It doesn't get any more obvious than that. Why isn't Onai accepting?

"Onai." Michael frowns, clenching his jaw. "I'm trying to ask if you'll come."

"As Axel's chaperone? I'll pass." Onai says.

Michael looks at him incredulously. "Are you serious?"

"I usually am."

"You know that's not what I'm saying."

"Then what are you saying?" Onai tilts his head like before, but it no longer has that innocence to it.

"Well, can you think of any?"

Her voice drops. "You remember Mr. Reynolds?"

"The old man?" I ask. "Hard to forget."

"He was one," she says.

My face drops. "... Was?"

Silence fills the room.

I hold my pillow closer, staring at the ceiling. Is she serious? Mr. Reynolds is dead? The guy who always believed this war was inevitable is gone? The man who tried to hand me over to the enemy pack to start the war has passed away? ... Did the brothers kill him?

"... Now that he's gone," Suzie whispers. "There's only one person I know that might have an idea how the pack transfer works."

"Who?"

She shakes her head. "Don't bother. He's an asshole."

"Please." I sit up. "If he can help-"

"He can't help anyone." She glares at the wall.

But I won't take no for an answer. "Suzie, who?"

"My mom's new husband," she says bitterly. "Mr. Reynolds' son."

I swallow the lump growing in my throat. "You know what?" I lie down again. "I'm sorry I asked."
