Ditched Cheating Alpha, I Led My Daughter to Life's Peak novel Chapter 62

The brothers, and Ethel, are clearly killing it on the court. A few people sit on the sidelines talking. Girls and guys chat while exchanging passes and shooting hoops. It's a really intense atmosphere. Every now and again they all get in sync and do drills. It's like they're one body.

"Are you feeling like trying something today?" Brittany slows down beside me, sounding excited for the first time all day. "Basketball? Volleyball?"

I shake my head. "No."

"Soccer?" Krys asks.

Outside, a few people are playing soccer. You can see them through the large windows on the far side of the gym that we're passing now. I once again shake my head. "I think I need to talk to Axel. Could you tell him?" I ask Brittany.

She looks apprehensive. "Is this another screaming fest like last time?"

I shake my head. "I just don't feel like walking into that right now." I look back down at people making a mad dash towards a ball. They're literally slamming into each other.

"Is it important?" Brittany asks.

"He lied to me," I say. I don't see any reason not to tell her.

Her and Krys exchange a look.

"What?" I ask.

Brittany shakes her head. "Nothing. I'll tell him."

I wait by the steps for Axel.

Carson is the first one up though, as uninvited as always. "What's wrong? Do you need something?" he checks my arms, my legs, my breathing.

I shake my head, pulling away from him. "I just need to talk to Axel."

"Why? Do you need something? I can help," he takes a step closer. "Water?"

I shake my head. "I just need to talk to Axel... Alone."

He stops in his tracks. He stares at me for a while, looking into my eyes. He nods, "Okay."

I nod.

"If that's what you want."

I nod because I don't owe him anything he hasn't offered me. Honesty.

"I'm busy anyway," he says.

I watch him go back down the steps, back to ordering people around. I'm not mad at him exactly, I'm just... I sigh. I just need to talk to Axel.

Axel allows Carson to pass before walking towards me. He smiles, hesitantly, "What do you need to talk about?"

I give him another look. "So you mean to tell me, that your borders are so weak anyone can get in? Even a weak rogue any one of you could've easily defeated?"

He opens his mouth.

I cross my arms. "It's either anyone can easily walk around your territory with no detection meaning my family and I are in danger, or that wolf was not just a random rogue, and once again, my family and I are in danger. Which one is it?"

He doesn't try to keep the innocent facade a moment longer, and it's at that moment that I realize I don't think I can completely trust this guy. He looks for words, carefully. "What do you know?"

"That you and Carson have been lying to me." I narrow my eyes. "I feel like Aiden's the only one I can trust to tell me the truth. Aiden."

Axel sighs, running his fingers through his hair. He's covered in sweat, not from the lying but the game. I wish it was from both. He better believe he's in hot waters now.

He takes a step closer to me.

I take a step back.

"Mia," He takes my hand. He starts talking before I can pull away. "You just found out about werewolves. I didn't see it as... beneficial to worry you with so much overwhelming information so soon. I was worried you'd run, like you said you would." He looks to the side, squeezing my hand. "I wish Aiden had respected my wishes."

I pull away. "Yeah, well I'm glad he didn't. I'm glad he wasn't waiting like you for something serious to happen and me to find out the hard way that I'm not safe."

"You are safe."

I frown. "Am I? Because Aiden said that it was one of your allies-"
