"Stop her," Onai commands.
Three nurses block the door. "It's your turn," they growl.
I stare in horror. "No, no I don't know what I'm doing."
The other half of the nurses sing my praises. "Finally, she's getting it."
I glare at them.
Onai gives a look.
They quiet down quickly, but not before an old lady mutters, "We can't even trust her with us, let alone them. It's like trusting a dog to watch your kids for the day."
My head snaps in her direction. I look back at all of the wolf pups. I'm sorry... I'm sorry, did she miss something? Is she seeing this? I'm the dog?
They lead me towards the kids and all the children start growling, even the toddlers-although the noise coming from their chubby cheeks does sound more like babble. I stand as far behind Onai and the caretakers as possible.
"Come here," the mean old lady says to me. "Hopefully you don't try to run any of them over."
Oh my gosh. Is this literally the old woman from Walmart? "I wasn't even the one driving," I say quietly.
She glares at me. "I heard that."
I channel everything good in me not to curse this woman out.
"Alright. Entertain them," she says.
Entertain them? I turn to the kids and they look at me, terrified.
She leans towards me, whispering, "They're in the stranger danger phase of childhood. They may not take too kindly to you." She smiles a little too hard.
Everyone's watching me.
"Um, okay," I start. "Do you guys want to... read a story?"
One kid mutters something in an unintelligible assortment of noises I never knew were humanely, or wolfly, possible, and then they all start going crazy again. Chaos. Mayhem. Uproar. I'm reminded of how much I hate kids.
Charlie's the only exception [paramore anyone?].
I look back at the woman.
"Try harder," she says.
"Hurry up," Onai says.
I pick up the pace, but I'm already doing 90 on the freeway. That's what it feels like with the way my legs are throbbing. I can't do this. I already had gym today. "Hey," I yell at him. "I asked politely if you could slow down."
Suddenly he turns left and we're in the forest behind the buildings. Close to the dense trees that seem to run throughout the entire town, interwoven... Why is he taking me away from the main road?
Okay, stranger danger. I'm not following him another step. I was right, Axel, your beta's trying to kill me. I turn around real quick without even asking. That's the mistake that all the girls in the movies. Don't tell the crazy guy you're onto him. Just run.
"Where are you going?" he asks me, when he sees I'm no longer anywhere near behind him.
I don't stop. I'm about to start screaming for help, but he's already beside me. Thankfully we're back on the sidewalk. Plenty of witnesses. I watch him with wide eyes.
He narrows his eyes at me. "You're going the wrong way."
"I'm going home," I say. "And you need to stay away from me."
He cocks his head back and watches me. We don't say anything.
"I don't know why you're acting like a crazy person," he says to me. "But I can't leave you alone. Something could happen to you."
