"Michael?" I ask.
He slowly reaches for Onai's jacket from my hands. "First thing's first, let's not get distracted children." He tosses the jacket over Onai's private part. "Jesus."
"Michael." I stare at him, horrified. "He could be dying!"
Onai growls suddenly as if coming back from the dead. "Would you two shut up already? I'm trying to make sure no one's coming to kill us. Either help me or..." he gestures for us to give him space.
"Okay, okay." Michael pushes him back down, seeing as he had sat up a little to bit our heads off. "First thing's first, check the injuries." He looks over Onai's body seriously this time. "Three wounds to the side, a few bite marks..." he stares at his face. "What's the irritation around your eyes?" he asks him.
Onai doesn't answer.
I remember the pepper spray. I scratch the back of my neck. "I kind of..." I flash the keychain device from my pocket.
Michael's eyes widen. "I thought he was helping you?"
"I mistook him for someone else." Guilt floods through me again.
Michael shakes his head. "Well honestly these claw marks are the real problem. They look lethal and they're in a pretty bad place. I don't know if there's anything we can do but try to stop the bleeding, which we... kind of should've already been trying to do..." Michael gives me a wary look.
I give him a wary look back. Wow. We suck at this.
Michael checks his phone for whatever he's googling. "Yup. It's a good thing he's not human... Or is super healing just a myth too?" he looks at Onai.
Onai looks away. "It's real. It just... takes me longer."
Michael nods, unfazed, but I can't help feeling like it's somehow connected to the way the townspeople treat him.
"Is there anyway we can do to help speed it up?" I ask.
Onai doesn't answer.
Michael keeps scrolling. "It says for large gashes we could use duct tape to speed up the bonding process. I don't know if we have any though."
I nod. "We do. I can go get it from Megan's DIY supplies."
Onai shakes his head. "I don't need duct tape. Just," he tries to turn on his side.
"What are you doing?" I ask.
"Check my shoulder."
I look with Michael at the multiple bite wounds. They're painful to even look at. I can't imagine what he's feeling.
I stay quiet. Something's up.
"Maybe I should hide him in the closet?" Michael asks quietly.
I look at Onai's wounds and shake my head. We can't risk it right now.
Beyond just his health and wellbeing, Onai is clearly the only one capable of protecting us. I don't know where the brothers are, and that thought scares me to death, but I can't just roll over and wait to be rescued when they might not even be on the way. That's waiting to die.
We have to prepare for the worst case scenario. As far as we know, no one else is coming, so in the event of another attack we'll need Onai in his best condition. We can't keep reopening his wounds by shoving him into a closet.
Dad starts talking again after a long pause. "Your mother cooked the nice rice with the lima beans and peas in it. It tastes really good and you can only get it if you open the door."
I sigh, loudly. "Dad, I'm fine, really. I'm coming down soon."
"I feel like you're just saying that to make me go away."
"What makes you think that?" I ask.
"The blood all over the floor."
