Ditching Me for His 'Soulmate'? His Loss. Next Stop: My New Life novel Chapter 83

Chapter 6

Despite Lucas’s relentless chatter, I chose to block out every word. My footsteps echoed steadily as I strode toward the door, determination guiding each step. Just as I reached the threshold, I paused, glanced back with a calm yet firm expression, and said, “I know Davis is swamped, but I’ve already set up an appointment for you three days from now.”

“This will be our final meeting. Don’t be late,” I added, my voice carrying an unmistakable edge of finality.

Once I stepped outside, leaving the room behind, Lucas’s panic only deepened. The leverage he once held over me had vanished, leaving him grasping for control that was no longer within his reach. His mind raced, desperately searching for any way to make me stay, but nothing came to him.

Without hesitation, Lucas reached for his phone and dialed HR. “What’s going on with Mia?” he demanded, his tone sharp and commanding, catching the HR representative off guard.

Typically, when an employee resigns, Lucas wasn’t involved much beyond ensuring the handover was complete. “Don’t worry,” HR replied, “Mia’s responsibilities have been fully transferred. There won’t be any disruption to the workflow.”

“And the report was approved by you, right? Is there something else you’re unsure about?” the HR voice asked gently.

Lucas pressed his fingers to his temples, trying to recall. He vaguely remembered signing off on a resignation letter recently, but his mind had been elsewhere—preoccupied with Emma—and he had brushed aside such “minor” paperwork without a second thought. Never did he imagine that one of those documents belonged to Mia.

At the firm, Mia had always taken care of these routine matters, and Lucas had simply signed off without delving into the details. Because Mia was so capable, he had more freedom to focus on Emma without worrying about the office. To keep things quiet and avoid gossip, Lucas had never revealed Mia’s true role in the company.

No wonder my resignation had passed so smoothly.

Lucas’s silence stretched uncomfortably over the phone, prompting HR to break it. “Lucas, is everything alright?”

I couldn’t help but smile wryly as I read the message. I typed back, “Your message came too late. I’m no longer the boss lady.”

“I filed for divorce from your Lucas not long ago.”

“I’m single now, and I have nothing to do with him anymore.”

Lucas’s carefully constructed world seemed to crumble the moment I left. The secret identity he had guarded so fiercely was now laid bare by his own missteps. His countless escapades with Emma were no longer hidden, and everyone at the office could see the truth.

Well, let his employees finally understand the man they’ve been working for all along.
