Divorce Failed! My Wife's Secret Identities Shock the World novel Chapter 22

Anya snapped, "Maeve, if you're jealous, just say that. Don't drag morality into it."

Maeve tipped her head. "Jealous of what? The title your mother clawed her way into? Or that award-winning project that could be hacked in under a minute?"

"Turning yourself from an affair baby into a 'legitimate daughter' by wrecking someone else's home—do you honestly think that's a good look?"

She dropped the bomb, then walked away like she hadn't just lit a match in a gas station.

Behind her, Isla and Anya—who'd been basking in praise—were suddenly drowning in whispers.

Maeve hadn't gone far when Mateo caught up.

"I saved you back there," he said, half teasing. "And you couldn't even say thank you?"

When Maeve first enrolled, she'd met Mateo once. They were both in Biology.

Mateo had always been drawn to beauty—not romantically, necessarily. More like an instinctive appreciation.

Maeve slowed her pace, letting him fall in beside her. "Fine. I owe you a favor."

Mateo grinned. "My favors aren't cheap."

Maeve didn't indulge him. "Then pretend I didn't say anything."

He sighed dramatically. "You're no fun. I'm kidding. It's just—seeing you on campus is rare. Feeling better? Are you actually going to attend classes this year?"

"Depends on my mood."

Mateo glanced at the pen she was twirling. Something rattled faintly inside.

"Let me guess," he said. "You've got needles in there."

Maeve nodded like it was nothing. "Yep."

"For the treatment with needles?"

Maeve made a casual slicing gesture across her throat. "More like... concealed weapons. For killing."
