Divorce Failed! My Wife's Secret Identities Shock the World novel Chapter 42

Mateo's eyes lit up. "Exactly. Eighteen people were on that research team. The experiment was nearly finished when there was a massive explosion. Everyone died on-site. The data was destroyed. The whole project was forced to end."

Maeve had heard of it, of course.

She'd run thousands of experiments in genetic and cellular research herself. When the Undying Project was made public, it caused an uproar in the scientific world.

Those eighteen researchers had tried to engineer human immortality through genetic modification, an idea that made corporate titans practically salivate.

Immortality meant you could keep your billions until the end of the world.

Who wouldn't want that?

"Why are you bringing it up now?" Maeve asked.

Mateo lowered his voice even more. "The lab was destroyed, but a prototype survived. A half-finished specimen."

"This weekend there's a luxury cruise auction. The current holder is putting the prototype on display and selling it to the highest bidder."

Maeve's interest sharpened. "You're sure what they're auctioning is tied to that project?"

"I don't spread rumors I can't back up."

The Fulton family's status in Aethelburg was no joke. As the second son, Mateo had channels most people didn't.

Later, in the restroom, Maeve turned the information over in her head.

If a real Undying Project prototype existed, the auction would be a powder keg.

Mateo had also mentioned that only people with invitations could even board the ship.

Outside the restroom, voices drifted in—several girls talking.

Girl A: "Is it true the bio sciences girl, Maeve, is someone's kept mistress?"

"You told the school you were sick. Yeah. Pregnancy, childbirth, recovery… takes about a year, doesn't it?"

The other two nodded along, eager.

"And the dean gave you special treatment. Maybe your sugar daddy cut a deal with the school."

Maeve's expression didn't change. She grabbed one girl by the collar.

"Who started this rumor?"

The girl squeaked, panicking. "Let go, I can't breathe!"

Maeve tightened her grip. "Answer me. Who started it?"

Tears welled in the girl's eyes. "W-we saw a post on the campus site. Someone was digging up stuff about you."
