Andres, shoved away, didn't get angry. He laughed instead. "Maeve, when I said I'd never love you in this lifetime, did that make you mad?"
Maeve lifted an eyebrow. "Give me a reason to be."
"What about Anya?" he asked.
Andres might've been drunk, but he wasn't stupid.
Maeve had humiliated Anya more than once at 1908. It wasn't just petty personal drama—beneath it was jealousy, resentment, the kind that came from being forced to share a family name with someone you couldn't stand.
Maeve let out a scornful laugh. "That low-rent little backstabber? The only place she belongs is on her knees at my feet, getting played with like a toy. What exactly does she have to brag about?"
"If you want to dig through trash, that's your right, Mr. White."
"But don't come and disgust me by dragging that kind of thing out and putting her next to me."
"Me? Mad over her? Go ask her if she's even worth it."
Maeve's viciousness pleased Andres for a moment—brief, sharp satisfaction. "You women are the best at saying one thing and meaning another."
Maeve shot back instantly. "And you men love using alcohol as an excuse to do whatever you want. Then afterward you make speeches about how you were drunk and your brain 'lost control.'"
Andres forced down the restless heat in his body. "You're young. But you sure seem to know men."
Maeve nodded, completely unbothered. "Of course I do. I've met enough of them to know how this goes."
Maybe it was the liquor, but Andres's mood turned edgy, unsettled.
He didn't want Maeve watching him make a fool of himself. He tossed out a cold "Do whatever you want," then walked out of the bedroom without looking back.
On the way, he grabbed Lucifer off Maeve's wrist too.
It was so childish it almost looked like a husband losing an argument and storming off with the kid out of spite.
That night, Andres effectively kidnapped Lucifer and made the dog sleep with him in the study.
When he woke up, he found himself—no surprise at all—curled around Maeve again.
