Maeve paused, her glass of water halfway to her lips.
"Isn't Lucifer hibernating in his tank?"
Andres let out a heavy sigh.
"I'm talking about Lucifer's true origin."
Maeve downed the rest of her water in one gulp.
"Did Naomi sell me out again?"
"Why did you hide this from me?"
Maeve was the one who gave Lucifer life, yet she had never breathed a word of it.
She defended herself smoothly. "I did bring it up. Did you believe me?"
Andres frowned. "When did you ever mention it?"
"I emphasized more than once that Lucifer was my son. By blood," Maeve replied.
Thinking back, Andres realized she had indeed said those exact words a few times.
But at the time, he had assumed she was just joking around.
Many pet owners affectionately referred to their animals as their children.
He had genuinely believed Maeve just adored Lucifer so much that she viewed the snake as her own flesh and blood.
He never imagined her words carried a literal truth.
"Maeve, if you don't step up and tell me the truth about certain things, I might be left in the dark for the rest of my life."
"I'm not omnipotent. I can't possibly know everything that happens behind closed doors."
"Especially since you're a genius when it comes to technology. You buried your personal information so deep that no one could ever find it."
"Even if I wanted to know everything about you, did you ever give me the chance? You never did."
Maeve nodded with blunt honesty.
"You're right. My basic background information was intentionally encrypted."
Her words completely silenced Andres, leaving him unable to utter a single argument.
Thinking it over, she made perfect sense.
If two people truly loved each other, external factors were irrelevant.
If he were the type of man who used romantic relationships to repay a debt of gratitude, someone with Maeve's temperament would never have given him a second glance.
"I'm sorry. I had no idea so many unexpected things happened during that time."
If Naomi hadn't come clean, he would never have known the sheer weight of what Maeve had endured alone.
It turned out that on the day he secretly met with Nancy Grover, Daisy Duke hadn't just been kidnapped—she was tortured to the brink of death.
He couldn't even fathom the furious despair Maeve must have felt, knowing he was out with Nancy while she desperately tried and failed to reach him.
And her explosive scene at his birthday banquet was entirely provoked by Nancy's deliberate taunts.
When she went to that scrapyard to face the assassins and bodyguards Nancy hired, she was already carrying his children.
