Ayla had done a huge favor for the company this time. She didn’t even take any payment. But Kaleb still insisted on giving her something back.
Some men say one thing and do another.
But Kaleb was the total opposite.
He gritted his teeth. “You don’t believe me?”
Emmett knew Max was coming later, and Kaleb might fight with him, so he tried to calm him down. “I’ve known you for years. Of course, I believe you.”
Then he added, “I’m just wondering … if Ayla finds out, will she
get
sad?”
Kaleb let out a cold laugh. He clearly didn’t want to talk about Ayla.
Emmett stayed quiet.
They arranged to meet Ayla before seeing the investor, and soon the two men arrived first. Ayla showed up a few minutes later.
She had dropped Draven off at home and felt she needed to celebrate today no matter what. That’s why she invited Kaleb to dinner.
Emmett, as always, rushed toward her happily.
Kaleb gave
her one look, then turned away like she annoyed him. He barely responded.
But Ayla was used to it.
Emmett smiled. “Ayla, we just got here, and you already arrived. Perfect timing!”
Ayla asked, “Who are you two meeting today?”
Emmett grinned. “You’ll see in a minute.”
Ayla didn’t think too much and followed him over to Kaleb,
Kaleb finally looked at her again and frowned. “You’re in a good mood today?”
Ayla smiled. “If I’m in a bad mood, why would I treat you to dinner?”

After hearing him throw a tantrum again, she already felt full of irritation.

But Ayla didn’t really get mad. Anger ruins your appetite. And if you’re going to cat a fancy meal, you need good company-or the food won’t taste good.
Kaleb muttered, “Do whatever you want.”
There was no way to talk nicely to him.
Thankfully, Emmett was there to smooth things over, so the mood didn’t get too bad.
The three of them headed to the private dining room.
The room was bright and wide, with a huge floor-to-ceiling window that looked out at a pretty courtyard. It was perfect for business meetings.
Soon after, Emmett got a call and stepped out to bring the guest inside.
A minute later, he walked in with a man in a suit who looked about thirty.
Emmett introduced him. “This is Mr. Patrick Lawson, investment director at NewRealm
Ventures.”
Then he introduced Ayla and Kaleb.
Kaleb was here to get funding. Normally, he treated people with attitude, but today he politely shook Patrick’s hand and greeted him.
Most investors he’d met before were old, overweight, greasy-looking, and acted like loud wannabe millionaires.
But Patrick had a fit body, strong presence, and a polished look. At one glance and you could tell he was a real professional from a major firm.
No wonder Emmett didn’t tell them earlier. The guest was a big deal.
Kaleb’s attitude instantly improved.
Ayla froze for a moment.
NewRealm Ventures … isn’t that one of Bennett Group’s venture capital firms? Max’s home turf.
What a coincidence.
Ayla didn’t fully understand the situation yet, but she calmly shook Patrick’s hand.

The four of them sat down to talk.

Patrick showed a very strong interest in the project. “There are many games that include old- world culture, but based on your demos and concept art, very few companies can build something this polished.”
Emmett and Kaleb exchanged excited looks.
All the past investors treated them like trash. This was the first real recognition they’d gotten.
For young creators, this was huge.
Once they started talking about the game, Kaleb couldn’t stop. He explained everything clearly and sounded very professional.
Ayla watched him and saw a different side of him.
A mature side.
A man focusing on his work really was attractive. He didn’t sound this good when he talked about anything else.
Ayla also kept watching Patrick.
Based on how well he understood the game, he must’ve researched the industry beforehand. Maybe he really did come because he was interested in Kaleb’s project.
Max might run a venture firm, but he was a decision-maker. He rarely got involved in specific deals.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
