That’s the reason? Am I really overthinking it?

Shawn had already met Ayla before. He liked beautiful people and things. Ayla’s sharp features, cool aura, and tall five-foot-eight frame made her feel like a living piece of art. The first time he saw her, she blew him away.
Draven was ridiculously good-looking. If his secretary looked bad, it would ruin the whole picture.
But Ayla didn’t. She made the whole scene better.
It was like a handsome guy needed an equally stunning partner to balance things out. That was what made it work.
Shawn still had questions, but Ayla’s face gave nothing away, so he didn’t push. “Please come along too, Ms. Keaton.”
She nodded. “Sure.”
Shawn led Winnie off to mingle. That left Draven and Ayla alone. Will stayed back, knowing Ayla was there to apologize. He didn’t want to interrupt.
Draven studied the sharp edge in her eyes. “Quick reflexes.”
Ayla softened instantly. “I won’t be the one to embarrass you.”
“I’m not accepting your apology.”
She hadn’t expected that. “Why? What did I do?”
Draven replied, “Figure it out yourself.”
If she could, she would’ve already said it. “Mr. Storm, could you give me a hint?”
“Use your brain.”
Ayla fell silent.
Before she could think more, a top Aqualith tycoon came over to talk to Draven, so she stepped aside.
She replayed every detail in her head, but nothing made sense.

Draven’s expression stayed cold. Maybe he just wasn’t in the mood to give her a clue tonight.
Ayla wasn’t someone who flattered others anymore. But with Draven, she’d misread him first. If she messed up, she had to fix it and earn back his trust.
Just then, a man came over. “Hello, Ms. Keaton. I’m Harry Zinn, an agent from Mr. Castro’s film company. We met on the plane.”
She remembered him immediately.
Luke Castro was a famous director in Aqualith, known for classic local films. His recent stuff wasn’t great, though.
Ayla wasn’t sure what Harry wanted, so she stayed quiet.
He smiled warmly. “Your look fits movies perfectly. No pressure if you’re not interested. But Mr. Castro is right here. Want to meet him?” He pointed to a man by the tall windows.
Ayla glanced over from afar, then shook her head. “No, I’m not interested in acting.”
“Actually, Mr. Castro wants investors for a new film. Storm Group has the funds. Could you introduce him?”
“That’s not on Mr. Storm’s schedule.”
“Ms. Keaton, everyone here is important. We’re not bad people. Can’t you give us a little favor? Just a quick chat-it’s normal networking.”
After a week studying Aqualith’s connections, Ayla knew the Film Association was full of big players from both sides of the law. Some of them had ties to the Storm Group.
Besides, tonight’s guests were all heavy hitters. She had no reason to refuse a standard business social.
“Okay.”
Ayla followed Harry to a lounge booth.
With floor-to-ceiling windows in front and the hall behind, it was completely safe.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have come at all.
“Mr. Castro, Ms. Keaton is here.”
Luke said, “Nice to meet you, Ms. Keaton.”

He was over 50, gray-haired, and a little paunchy. Without the director vibe, he was just an average middle-aged man.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
