Halle let go of her hug and looked Ayla up and down. “You look great. I thought you’d be crying,” she said. She knew better than anyone how hard divorce had been on Ayla.
Yesterday, Ayla had driven around alone for hours. She remembered what she needed to remember. She cried all she needed to cry.
Now, it was finally over.
“I’m fine,” Ayla said.
Halle hugged her again. “Now that you have the divorce certificate, I can finally relax. That jerk didn’t cause you any trouble, right?”
Ayla didn’t care. “Even if he did, what can he change?”
Halle’s eyes lit
up at her response.
Right after the divorce, Ayla had been hurting. Anyone could see her stress and how tangled her emotions were. She had made the choice to leave, but she didn’t have her spark
Now?
Her spark was back-bright and sharp. She looked like someone ready to run straight ahead without stopping. A completely different person.
“I came back thinking I’d need to comfort you,” Halle said. “But looking at you now? If I don’t get you a male escort tonight, I’ll feel guilty.”
Ayla laughed. “Sure. I want to try it.”
She was single now. Perfect time to have some fun.
And she had money, so why not enjoy herself?
Halle gave her the name of a restaurant. Ayla typed it into her GPS and started driving.
Halle grabbed the roses from the passenger seat. “Who gave you these?”
“Max.”
Halle was dumbstruck. “Why did he show up?”
“He brought the flowers to celebrate Troy finally escaping the marriage, but he didn’t run into him at the
courthouse.”
Halle clenched her teeth. “They’re all jerks. Who exactly escaped the misery here?”
She never had a strong opinion about Max before. Now she had zero positive feelings left.

Ayla mocked, “So I took the flowers for Troy, and told Max to make sure he knows I’m the one who escaped.”
Troy’s outburst after the divorce made everything clear. He just couldn’t stand how eager she was to leave him.
Good. Let him understand it fully.
She really couldn’t wait to get out.
Over the meal, Halle told her she had broken up with her boyfriend. Their six-month limited romance had expired.
“So, are you planning to find someone new?” Ayla asked.
She thought of Will for a second, but nothing had ever happened between them. Not even a hint.
Curious, she asked anyway.
Halle shrugged. “If Will likes me, I’d be happy. If he doesn’t, that’s normal too. But if you’re asking what I think about him? I’m telling you now, I’m not dating Will.”
“Why not?”
“I only date for about six months. I’m not committing to any guy long-term. And after a breakup, can people stay friends? Most of the time, no. So if I dated Will, our connection would be gone. I finally have an elementary school friend who knows Mr. Storm. That’s a rare treasure.”
Halle grinned. “So, Will can only stay my
friend.”
Ayla suddenly couldn’t hold it in anymore. “Halle, you always say you’re my biggest fan, but honestly, I like you a lot too.”
Halle stared at her, stunned. The cool, straight- A girl suddenly confessing like this made her whole body tense up. “W-what happened? Why are you saying this?”
“You always know what you want,” Ayla said. Her eyes were full of admiration.
“You don’t overthink. You live free. I like that.”
Halle’s whole body broke out in goosebumps. “Ahhh-stop! You’re scaring me! I’m not used to this!”
Ayla poured herself a drink and clinked glasses with her.
Ayla always had a cool vibe. Even drinking soda, she looked like she was taking a shot at a bar-sharp, confident, untouchable.
Halle got used to it fast.

Ayla’s presence was sharp. When she didn’t smile, her presence was strong enough to make people take a step back.
Halle, on the other hand, was the social one. She could talk circles around anyone.
Ayla didn’t need to talk. Sitting there quietly was enough for everyone to notice her.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
