Chapter 183 The Morning Trouble

Halle waited about ten minutes before James finally walked out of the bathroom.

She avoided his eyes and went to shower next, staying in there for 30 minutes on purpose. Her plan was simple-stall long enough so that James would be gone by the time she came out.

But when she stepped out, he was still there.

He had pushed open the cross-pane window in the bedroom, letting the air clear.

He stood by the window, tall and relaxed, enjoying the bright green view outside. When he heard her come out, he spoke like it was the most natural thing in the world. “Your place has a nice view. All that green really lifts your mood. You don’t see this up north this time of year.”

Halle said calmly, “That’s why I prefer the South.”

James raised a brow and laughed. “Why does that sound like you’re picking a fight?”

Halle didn’t respond. Instead, she looked serious all of a sudden. “Do you have any illnesses?”

James blinked. “What?”

Her

eyes drifted down for a second. “I’m worried one night with you means ten trips to the OB-GYN.”

Last night had made one thing clear; James enjoyed this kind of thing a lot. There was no way he hadn’t been with countless women. Even though he used protection, she still worried about catching something.

James had honestly just wanted to chat about the scenery. Being hit with that question stunned him. He had planned to tease her a little, but seeing how serious she was, he sighed. “You’re safe. I’m clean.”

Halle looked at him like she didn’t believe a word. “Uh-huh. And why don’t I believe that?”

James rubbed his forehead. “The last time I check, I can’t even remember. My yearly checkups are perfect. If you want the report, I’ll have my secretary send it right now. Do you want it?”

“Yes, please,” Halle said.

Seeing is believing.

As for him not remembering the last time, no way she was buying that nonsense.

While Halle’s side of the morning was chaotic, Ayla’s was surprisingly normal. She woke up early and went

to work like usual.

The text from Draven, however, was unexpected.

“I’m waiting for you in the garage.”

Her car was still parked at the bar, so she had no way to drive to work.

Draven’s attention to detail, well, that was just part of who he was.

When Ayla reached the garage, the driver wasn’t the one behind the wheel. Draven himself sat in the driver’s seat. She thought she’d be driving him as usual, but Draven didn’t give her the option. “Get in.”

So Ayla climbed in, with no choice but to follow his lead.

Aside from a simple greeting when she got in the car, they didn’t say another word on the way to the office.

When the car rolled to a stop in the parking lot, they stepped out together and walked side by side into the elevator.

Someone saw everything.

“Herman, who’s that woman?”

Herman’s sister, Melody Howel, thought she was seeing things. She knew Draven well; there was no way she’d mistake him for someone else.

What she never expected was Draven actually drove himself to work. And sitting in the front passenger seat was a woman. They got out together, then walked in step, only about a foot apart.

Melody had known Draven for years. She had never seen him walk this close to any woman.

The worst part? From the back, they looked good together, so good it made her chest tighten with jealousy.

Melody’s hands balled into fists. She turned and glared at Herman as if he had betrayed her.

His calm, gentle face looked the same as always-calm, steady, and unfazed. Almost like seeing Draven with a woman was totally normal.

And that was exactly what felt so wrong.

Melody burst out, furious, “You knew about this already, didn’t you? Why didn’t you tell me?!”

Herman looked at her, confused, and asked seriously, “What exactly should I tell you?”

Melody was Herman’s younger sister by two years. To her, he had always been warm and steady. But that warmth felt more like a shield-like nothing truly got to him. No anger, no weakness. Nothing.

Because he never showed emotion, she never knew what he cared about. Just like now. He clearly understood everything, yet he refused to say anything.

Her voice dropped low and tight. “Herman, you know I like Draven. I’ve liked him my whole life. You’re his friend. Why won’t you help me? Why do you keep pushing me away? I don’t get it at all.”

Herman tried to comfort her. “Draven doesn’t like you. Even if you like him, it won’t change anything.”
