Chapter 196 Hacking to the Company

Ayla looked at him coolly. “Yeah, problem?”

Kaleb gritted out, “Fine. Do your thing.”

He released her wrist, and she went right back to work. All four monitors came to life at once, filled with shifting screens and scrolling lines of code.

Kaleb’s temples started to throb. It looked like pure gibberish to him.

He glanced at Ayla, then back at the monitors.

The way she sat there-composed, confident, and in control-started to ease his nerves. His chest loosened.

In those 10 minutes, Kaleb understood something clearly. His sister wasn’t just smart. She was brilliant. And for once, he didn’t care about the idea of relying on her.

He used to think guys who leaned on their sisters were pathetic. Weak.

But right now, he had to admit-it felt good being carried by a woman like Ayla.

Maybe I’ve fallen.

Ayla was almost finished when the doorbell rang.

Kaleb flinched, his nerves snapping tight. “Who the hell is that?” They were doing something illegal here.

Ayla didn’t even pause her work. “Did you order food?”

“Do I look like I’ve got time for that?”

“Then see who it is.”

Kaleb didn’t question her. He trusted Ayla’s skills more than anyone’s. She was helping him with something huge, and he wasn’t ungrateful enough to argue. So he went.

He was in high spirits as he walked through the living room. He let out a low whistle, hopped once, mimed a basketball shot, and made his way to the door with a lazy stride.

“Yeah? Who is it?” he called, pulling the door open. The moment he saw the tall man outside, his mood flipped. His muscles went rigid.

He scanned the guy from head to toe, suspicion written all over his face. Something about him-maybe the jawline, maybe the posture-reminded him of Troy. That bastard.

And anyone who reminded him of Troy instantly made his blood boil. “Who the hell are you?” He scowled.

Draven’s mood lifted.

So this was Ayla’s brother. Her date turned out to be family.

“Draven,” he said smoothly. “Your sister’s neighbor.”

Kaleb laughed, short and mocking. He had zero patience for slick, composed men like this. “I don’t give a damn who you are. Nobody shows up at this hour just to see my sister. You trying to harass her? Here’s your warning-stay the hell away.”

Kaleb was about six-foot-one, eye level with Draven’s brow. Draven was 28, just eight years older, but Kaleb looked at him like he was ancient.

In reality, Draven didn’t look old at all. He was too handsome for that. Sharp features, straight posture, presence that radiated quiet power. There wasn’t a trace of grease or pretension about him. He looked like the kind of man who could silence a room without raising his voice.

But Kaleb didn’t see any of that. To him, any man at Ayla’s door was a threat. His mind twisted everything, painting Draven as some shady creep.

Draven was caught off guard.

Most young men stiffened in his presence.

Few ever held his gaze. None had the guts to talk to him like that.

He’d seen arrogance, fear, charm, and confidence-but this was something new entirely.

So this was Ayla’s brother.

The contrast between them was almost absurd.

Or maybe, he thought, Ayla had this side too. She just never let him see it.

As he frowned, Kaleb snapped, “You hear me or not?”

Then he slammed the door shut. The sound cracked through the hall like a hard slap.

Draven stood there, still for a few seconds.

It was the first time someone had managed to shut him down after barely a word.

What a bold kid.

Inside, Kaleb’s mind spun. For once, he wasn’t thinking about Zane or the hack. A new worry hit him square in the chest. Please don’t tell me Ayla just got divorced and already found herself a new guy.

Kaleb stormed toward the study, his expression dark and brooding. But after a few steps, he stopped short.

Then he spun around and pulled the door open again.

Draven had only come by to see who Ayla was meeting. Once he saw it was her brother, his curiosity was satisfied, and he was ready to leave.
