Skyla had walked straight into Ayla’s trap. It felt like being slapped hard by someone she looked down on The humiliation was intense, and the experience was awful. Her expression darkened.
Howard had caught on as well.
Earlier, he had wondered if he’d misjudged Ayla. Now he’d seen it for himself.
Still, Ayla had some nerve. When she called one point five million, he had almost backed out.
Skyla’s face looked terrible. “Howard, I’m sorry. I didn’t expect Ayla to play me like that. I’ll cover the money. This one’s on me.”
“What’s there to apologize for? I said I’d buy it for you, and I meant it,” Howard said. Skyla’s hacking skills had helped him before. He wasn’t about to take her money.
Skyla hesitated. “I—”
“I don’t like polite back-and-forth,” Howard said. “It wasn’t that much.
“Alright,” Skyla said. Her mood lifted slightly, then she frowned again. “Try not to have contact with Ayla in the future.”
Howard raised an eyebrow.
Skyla noticed. “What?”
“Nothing,” Howard said, agreeing easily.
He’d raised his eyebrow because he didn’t like forming cliques or picking sides.
He went along with it anyway, without pressing the issue. He wasn’t close to Ayla in the first place, and the few times they’d met, his impression had been neutral at best. There was no reason to force himself to befriend her.
Besides, Ayla was Troy’s ex-wife, and Howard had plenty of friends. Losing one or two potential connections didn’t matter.
Still, this did count as choosing a side-Skyla’s side.
Because even among friends, there were degrees of closeness.
The only difference was that Howard wouldn’t completely cut ties. It was more about whether you trusted someone or not. He was perfectly fine keeping things polite on the surface.
But Skyla seemed to mean more than that. Not just choosing sides, maybe even turning openly against Ayla.
Was the conflict really that serious? It didn’t seem like it should be.

But whatever.
Howard was easygoing and didn’t bother dwelling on it.

Since Ayla hadn’t won the artwork, she bought a set of porcelain dinnerware instead. That took care of the gift, and the afternoon hadn’t been wasted.
That evening, she and Halle went out for a nice dinner, then headed home separately.
Since they’d eaten out, Meryll didn’t need to come by. The house was quiet, with no one around.
Ayla didn’t feel particularly bothered by it. Still, a full week had passed, and Draven was somehow still away on his business trip.
When was he coming back?
Because of the time difference, Ayla hadn’t contacted Draven.
Instead, she called Blake to ask when Draven’s trip would end.
It turned out his flight landed at two o’clock the next afternoon.
After hearing that, Ayla decided to go pick Draven up at the airport.
Why did the thought occur to her? She didn’t dig into it too deeply. They were living together now, and that meant helping each other out.
A week earlier, Draven had brought her home when she was completely drunk, and had even blow-dried her hair for her.
Based on that alone, after he’d worked so hard on this trip, going to the airport to pick him up felt perfectly reasonable.
At 1:30 p.m. the next afternoon, Ayla arrived half an hour early at the VIP arrival corridor for Draven’s flight.
There was a private lounge there. All she had to do was sit and wait, and Draven would come to her.
With half an hour still to go, Ayla ordered a coffee.
She had driven there herself, so keeping her laptop in the car was convenient. Using the extra time, she opened it up and started working on the early-stage preparations for LugiX’s R&D.
All of this would need to be coordinated with Halle in advance. Ayla liked to prepare everything first, then fully commit once she jumped in.
After a little over 20 minutes, a bag was suddenly placed down in front of her on the table.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
