That was normal. Kayla only ever gave him one chance to back down. If he didn’t take it, she wouldn’t lower herself to fix things. Then came the cold shoulder and no contact. Draven didn’t mind.
On the drive home, the closer he got to home, the calmer he felt.
He knew it was because Ayla was there.

Warm light filled the home.
A moment later, Ayla heard him and came out of the study.
She was already in white pajamas, her hair loose over her shoulders. The moment their eyes met, her eyes widened, then lit up as she smiled.
At that moment, Draven felt like his breath stopped. His whole body froze.
She ran to him and crashed into his arms. Instinctively, he wrapped his arms around her waist.
She was warm, her scent soft and addictive.
His breathing turned shallow. After a second, his arms tightened, holding her close as his breath grew heavy

ever.
Just moments earlier, Ayla had been in a video meeting, with the front-door camera feed on another screen.
When she saw Draven come home carrying flowers she loved, she immediately sensed something was off, even though he looked normal.

She left the meeting right away and came out.
Seeing him at the door, she confirmed it.
Draven wasn’t in a good mood.
Even his hug was tighter than usual. That was how he showed his feelings.
They’d been together for over half a month, and she already understood him well.
Tight hugs.
Strong kisses.
A few sweet words, but clear actions.

After holding her for a while, Draven heard her phone buzz. He loosened his arms and looked at her. “Are you busy?”
Ayla replied, “After you left, my coworkers asked me to go in. I didn’t-I joined the meeting from home.”
He asked, “Why didn’t you go?”
“I promised you I’d wait for you at home,” she replied.
His gaze deepened instantly. Ayla had seen that look many times. He loved hearing things like that-simple, firm words that showed he mattered.
The ice inside him slowly melted.
He took her hand, led her to the kitchen island, set the flowers down, and then guided her to the couch.
Instead of pulling her into his arms like usual, he glanced at his leg and then at her. “Sit.”
Ayla paused. His calm authority made it impossible to refuse.
Her heart skipped.
She sat on his lap. At once, his arms wrapped around her waist. His hands were long enough to circle her fully, one resting lightly on her stomach.
His palm was hot, warming her even through the fabric.

In the elevator earlier, Draven had seen his dark expression and wanted to turn around, not wanting Ayla to see him like that. But the warmth of this home stopped him. He couldn’t leave.
Besides, Ayla had already sensed his mood earlier. If he didn’t come home, she would worry.
So he came back.
“Ayla, if you’re busy, don’t mind me. Do what you need to do,” he said.
With him, Ayla was free.
Draven wanted her with him all the time. It fed his possessive side, eased his fear of losing her, and let him shape life his own way.
But he knew he couldn’t do that.
She chose him because he respected her.
If that respect disappeared after they got together, she wouldn’t stay.
Ayla smiled. She could easily feel his care and consideration for her.
Even so, she kept studying his eyes, trying to tell if something was bothering him. His eyes were like a flawless mask. All she saw was calm light, like the sun over still water. No matter how close she was, she couldn’t read him.
Still, she was sure he wasn’t happy. She had no proof, but she refused to pry or force him to talk. Just like what happened with Phil, she had already said what she needed to say to sort out her feelings and left the rest for later.
In the end, Draven cracked first. “Why are you staring at me like that?”
Ayla raised her hand and lightly brushed the corner of his perfectly shaped eye. “Maybe I’m wrong, but it feels like you’re a little upset. It’s fine, though. I just want to stay with you. Work
can wait until tomorrow.”

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
