Divorce me I'm done serving you (Ayla) novel Chapter 753

It was nauseating. Absolutely relentless.

Ayla laughed and shook her head. "Are you serious right now?"

"Completely. If I'd met you earlier, I never would have let you marry Troy."

Ayla's hands tightened on the steering wheel for just a second, then relaxed.

Fabiola caught the small movement and read her perfectly. Her voice gentled. "I mean it. I'm not joking with you."

"...Don't worry, I'm not moved." She was a little touched, but she'd lived through enough by now that her heart had hardened some. Back when she was still fragile, a single sentence from Fabiola might've completely wrecked her.

Fabiola heard that and let out a quiet laugh. "Even if I'd been there, you might not have listened to me back then."

Ayla was curious now. "If I really didn't listen, what would you have done?"

Fabiola made a sound. "You're not the one who saw through me as two-faced? Here's what would've happened: I'd have sweet-talked you, indulged you, charmed you until you had zero guard up against me—then I would've bared my teeth, laughed, and dragged you away. You'd have been sold and still counting the money for me. One good shake and you'd fall in line."

What Fabiola described lined up perfectly with the part of her Ayla had already seen. Setting aside whether she would've been stubborn back then—looking at everything that had happened since, imagining that hypothetical, Ayla actually found herself hoping Fabiola really would have stopped her.

Over all these years, Ayla had barely seen Phil. After her mother left for Zheron to do her research, Ayla had mostly looked after herself. When she'd been young and reckless, heading in the wrong direction, what she really needed was someone to rein her in.

The way Kaleb had been in the beginning—raging at everything, impossible to reach—that was a boy who'd needed someone to steady him. Ayla had barely managed to pull him back. If Kaleb had just grown up wild on his own, he would've become someone who ran everything through sheer force of will, refused to hear other opinions, and possibly blown up his whole partnership with Emmett.

Kaleb had his issues. And Ayla wasn't free of her own mistakes. Back then, she'd been desperate to hold onto something—anything. Add to that the fact that it was her first time falling for someone, and she'd fallen so hard she'd completely lost herself.

If Fabiola had actually been there, she would've been a good influence.

Fabiola noticed the silence. "What are you thinking about?"

"What you said."

"Touched?" Fabiola pushed her luck.
