The more Troy thought about it, the more his heart ached.
Children were sensitive. If they sensed that he was unhappy, they would be affected too.
So Troy handed the child over to the nanny and drove to the church alone.
When reality could no longer be changed, and hope seemed out of reach, people often turned to faith and fortune-telling for comfort, using it as a way to escape the pain they couldn't face.
On his seventh visit to the church, Troy had met a highly respected priest. The priest told him that he was someone blessed by fate. All he needed to do was wait, and his wish would come true.
Troy hadn't understood what that meant. The priest only smiled and said, "The time hasn't come yet."
But today, Ayla had accepted Draven's proposal. Even if that so-called opportunity still existed, there was no way he and Ayla could ever be together again.
That was why he was going back to the church. He needed answers.
Had it all been a lie? If he lost even this last shred of hope, what would he have left to live for? Troy didn't know. He couldn't see any future at all. So he had to find the priest.
Then the accident happened. Distracted by his emotions, Troy lost control of the car.
The church sat high in the mountains. His car smashed through the guardrail and plunged off the cliff.
This is it? Am I going to die?
The terrifying sensation of free-fall swallowed him whole. Most people would have felt unbearable fear. But at that moment, Troy felt relieved.
If I died, the pain would finally end.
Perhaps this was the opportunity the priest had spoken of.
Perhaps this is how my story ends.
Someone as terrible as me deserved nothing less than a miserable ending.
He didn't know how much time had passed, but the expected pain never came. Instead, someone was shaking him awake.
"Mr. Winston, we're home."
Troy frowned. His head throbbed violently. It was the familiar headache that came after drinking too much. And that voice... It belonged to Jed, his former assistant.
But Jed had been dismissed years ago after drugging Ayla. Why was he here?
Troy's voice was icy. "Shut up. Stop talking."
Jed looked confused. "Mr. Winston, Ms. Summer called. She got home safely."
Ms. Summer? Skyla Summer?
Only then did Troy realize something was wrong.
He immediately pulled out his phone and checked the date.
The moment he saw it, his entire body began to tremble.
Is this a hallucination?

Fear gripped him. Still, he forced himself to stay calm. It's okay. There's still time. Everything can still be fixed.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
