Robert felt completely ineffectual, his mind refusing to process the truth. How could Ashton, the former brother -in–law he despised so much, become the distinguished guest of the Gale Assembly? He couldn’t help but wonder if Millie was romantically interested in Ashton.

He clenched his fists as he suddenly realized that Ashton’s luck with women had been phenomenal since the divorce–every woman was increasingly gorgeous and held increasingly powerful connections. Roxy’s current man, Calvin, on the other hand, was utterly unimpressive.

“He may be a distinguished guest at Auric Night, but I’m still considered a guest as well, Ms. Hohl! He publicly assaulted me in front of everyone! How do you plan to address this offense, Ms. Hohl?” Tanya asked through gritted teeth.

She had never suffered such humiliation in her life, and she absolutely refused to let the matter drop.

“You can only chalk this up as your misfortune, Mrs. Sloan,” Millie replied with a faint smile.

Had Ashton decided to end Tanya’s life, the Gale Assembly would have worked tirelessly to cover for Ashton, never to pursue a single charge on Tanya’s behalf.

Millie’s cruel dismissal hit Tanya harder than a physical blow, sending her into a state of hysterical frenzy. She was consumed by the desire to leap at Ashton and throttle him. She was glaring at Ashton as she cast aside all dignity, raising her hand for a swift, desperate retaliation.

Millie’s expression immediately hardened as she blocked Tanya before she could reach Ashton.

She seized Tanya’s wrist and forcefully shoved her away, yelling, “I have held back only because you are a guest at Auric Night, Mrs. Sloan! If you dare to overstep these bounds and show Mr. Gray any further disrespect, I’ll throw you out instantly and deem it a direct assault on the Gale Assembly itself!”

Tanya stumbled back and fell onto Roxy. She was consumed by a torrent of resentment, shame, and blinding fury. She had suffered a severe public humiliation, and it was all because of Ashton.

Roxy supported Tanya, gently patting Tanya’s back. She cast a deep, lingering glance at Ashton and Millie before murmuring, “That’s enough, Mom. Let’s just head inside first.”

She was deeply frustrated. She had been foolish before, but now she was gradually beginning to understand the situation. Ashton, whom she had once dismissed as a failure, was proving to be far from useless.
