Chapter 654

Faye’s eyes flickered with irritation, finding it hard to believe that Josie was treating her as if she weren’t good enough. She could have attracted a queue of men stretching from Javonbury to Joviana if she ever desired a partner.
She hurriedly shot Ashton a frantic look, clenching her fists and shaking them at him in a silent threat.
Ashton gazed at Faye’s peerless beauty, a sight that set his pulse thundering.
He remained silent for a moment before turning to Josie, saying, “I think we should set the engagement aside first. After all, Faye and I aren’t even acquainted yet, Mrs. Moore.”
“Huh?” Josie’s face tell, looking utterly disappointed.
Faye and the others were visibly relieved, thinking that at least Ashton still had a sense of propriety.
“Why don’t Faye and I just start out as boyfriend and girlfriend? Faye and I can revisit marriage once we’ve developed some genuine feelings. How does that sound, Mrs. Moore?” Ashton suggested with a grin.
“That makes perfect sense! You two should get to know each other first, but don’t take forever. When the time comes, you should get married as soon as possible. I’m still looking forward to having a grandchild!”
Josie’s eyes gleamed with delight. She was more certain than ever that Ashton was a sensible and considerate man–definitely the kind of son–in–law she wanted to keep by her side.
Faye yelled, “I don’t want to be his girlfriend! How can you be such a scumbag, Ashton? You’re totally taking advantage of this situation! I-”
“Faye!” Josie snapped, her hand flying to her chest as her eyes filled with tears.
“You were unconscious for more than a year, leaving me in constant agony. I’ve aged so much because of how heartbroken I was -I even grew a few gray hairs! I’ve finally found the perfect man to save you, and this is how you treat me!
“Is this how a daughter treats her mother, or do you want me to die of frustration, Faye?”
Josie’s face was full of grievance as she sniffled. “You can leave this instant if you refuse to become Ashton’s girlfriend. I’ll pretend that I’ve never had a daughter, and we’ll sever our relationship for good, Faye!”
“Josie…” George tried to step in, but Josie pushed his hand away.
“Haven’t you witnessed Ashton’s brilliance, George? You know very well how much we’ve begged others, yet Faye recovered as soon as Ashton intervened! He is the man she was destined to be with! You’ve also given your word that anyone who saved Faye would become her husband, George!”
“I…” George trailed off before pinching the bridge of his nose, looking utterly exhausted.
“Alright, Mom! I’ll give it a shot and try dating Ashton! I won’t guarantee that anything will actually come of it, though!” Faye declared before biting her lower lip.
She was well aware that Josie was just putting on an act, but she had no choice but to appease her for now. She realized that Josie had clearly aged a great deal while she was in a coma, so she couldn’t bear to cause any more grief to Josie, who had exhausted herself for her recovery.
“That’s more like it!” Josie flashed a grin and shot Ashton a knowing look, clearly proud of how she had handled Faye. Upon seeing how Josie stood up for him and treated him like part of the family, Ashton felt a sense of warmth wash over him.
He couldn’t help but compare her to Tanya, who had looked down on him at every turn. He reflected that the disparity between one person and another could actually be that great.
“Faye is your girlfriend from now on, Ash! She can be a bit headstrong and aloof, but don’t let it get to you. If she gives you any
