Chapter 740
Ashton’s body slammed into the edge of the barrier. The impact of a violent jolt through him as the sense of impending death surged over him.
When he met Corvus‘ gaze, he felt nothing staring back at him. Those eyes held no emotion at all.
From their exchange just now, he could tell that Corvus showed almost no emotional fluctuation. He was a pure killing machine, fearless even in the face of death.
Corvus was the deadliest man Ashton had ever faced in the same realm. If Ashton had time to truly break in his new power and master the raw output of the semi–divine realm, he might not have fallen into such a disadvantage.
But right now, he was being suppressed by Corvus, whose threat exceeded anything Ashton had anticipated.
“This fight is exhilarating,” Ashton said quietly, pushing himself back to his feet.
The moment he had been waiting for, dancing on the edge between life and death, had finally arrived.
“Pass me the blade!” he shouted, his hand snapping open.
He felt that Corvus was a real opponent, one worthy of being slain by him.
Nearby, Neil drew in a sharp breath and hurled the Frostwyrm Blade toward him.

Ashton caught it in one smooth motion. While staring at Corvus‘ impassive expression, the corners of his mouth slowly lifted.
“I can feel the pain buried deep inside you. You want to die, right? Fine. I’ll set you free today. But do me a favor as well Fight me with everything you have. I don’t run into opponents like you twice in a lifetime.”
Instead of responding, Corvus raised his scythe only to continue attacking as he pushed himself to the limit.
The terrifying aura of the semi–divine realm tore through the arena.
Ashton stepped forward instead of retreating. What he lacked most right now was combat on the brink of death. If he didn’t push himself to the edge, how could he ever breakthrough his limits?
The life–or–death arena became their battlefield. Neither man held anything back. Both fought with a single goal to take the other’s head and walk away alive.
Silver arcs flashed and collided, tearing the space around the arena. The friction between the scythe and the Frostwyrm Blade sent countless sparks flying.
After only a few exchanges, both Ashton and Corvus were already marked by deep, bloody wounds. Neither of them paid any attention to the injuries. Their focus never wavered as they remained locked in a life–or–death duel, each drawing out their full strength.
Suddenly, Corvus‘ figure flashed. Instead of evading Ashton’s strike, he let the Frostwyrm Blade drive straight through his chest
and abdomen.
Using the opening, he forced his way in, dragging Ashton into his killing range as the scythe came down from above in a cold, merciless arc. Every ounce of semi–divine power was condensed into that single strike.
“The Median Cut,” Corvus said flatly.
It was as though he had returned to the final night in the assassin training camp, the night he had used this very strike to kill the person he loved most. From that moment on, whatever humanity he had left was gone.
What remained was a weapon built to kill.
“It’s over,” Flint said softly, finally exhaling in relief.

He was deeply satisfied with Corvus‘ performance.
This was what made Corvus truly terrifying. He fought without regard for his own life, and that made him Flint’s deadliest weapon. Against Corvus, Ashton still didn’t measure up.
Sometimes, Flint wondered what Corvus‘ life might have been like if he hadn’t intervened and changed his path. Perhaps Corvus could have risen openly, the way Ashton was doing now, standing out even among other prodigies.
“Ashton!”
Even Faye’s composure cracked as tension finally showed on her face. The Phoenixbome lineage within her surged violently, as an overwhelming urge rose within her to rush onto the arena and save him.
Roxy stood as well, her heart pounding. She feared for Ashton’s life, yet part of her wanted him to fall, so she could once again look down on him.
The tension spread through the crowd as more people realized what they were seeing–Ashton had been driven into a true life- or–death corner.
Corvus was gambling everything on this final strike, trading his own survival for an attack so desperate and overwhelming that it left the air heavy with despair.
Invisible killing intent closed in from every direction. Even Ashton felt his heart sink as the threat of real death bore down on him. If he couldn’t find a way to break the deadlock, his body would truly be cleaved in two by that scythe.
“So this is what death feels like,” Ashton murmured.
A sharp laugh escaped him. There was no fear in him at all. If anything, a fierce, burning madness was rising in its place.
“Corvus, you’re magnificent. This feeling of being so close to death is exhilarating.”
He ran his tongue along the corner of his mouth as the black flames deep within his pupils surged violently.
“This feeling… This is the limit.”
Some kind of shackle within Ashton broke. A terrifying killing intent erupted outward as if a restraint had shattered from within. His eyes flared with fury, like a black dragon finally roused to wrath. He thrust his hand forward and closed his grip around the descending scythe.
