Under the crushing weight of the otherworldly realm power, Ashton’s bones ground together with an audible snap.
His clothes were torn to rags in an instant, and blood began to seep from his skin once more. His feet were driven deep into the earth as his entire frame shuddered under the strain. Against such a lethal, overwhelming force, any attempt at resistance seemed futile.
“You do have some backbone, after all! You’ll still have to kneel if I command you to, though! You’ll remain on your knees forever if you refuse to perform the Soul–Oath!” Ember snorted derisively.
She could see clearly that Leona and Faye harbored feelings for Ashton. She intended to sever those ties and show them that such a man was beneath them before they joined the Divine Phoenix Order.
She planned to prove to Leona and Faye just how weak and small Ashton truly was by trampling on his pride and dignity. That horrific, overwhelming weight slammed down a second time.
Ashton’s flesh twisted under the monstrous force, but he kept his head high and fists tightly clenched, staring Ember down with unwavering resolve.
“Faye is my fiancee. Nothing will ever alter that! You should kill me now or get ready, because if I survive today, I swear I’ll pay you back ten times over for what you’ve done today!”
“How arrogant! I’d like to see exactly how long you can last!” Ember snapped, her temper flaring. She intensified the oppressive force, refusing to believe that Ashton was truly fearless or capable of enduring the agony of his bones and tendons being ground to dust.
She was determined to break his spirit. Once his spine was shattered, he would never dare look at the Holy Maidens of the Divine Phoenix Order again.
Ashton’s horrific wounds visibly tore open as deep red blood poured out, a shocking sight to see. He could have ended the whole ordeal by simply kneeling before Ember, but he remained standing tall. He flashed a contemptuous grin and fixed a cold gaze on Ember, seemingly intent on remembering her face.
Neil asked anxiously, “Why aren’t you intervening, Ms. Nolan?”
Queenie shook her head, replying calmly, “You can rest assured that with me present, Ember wouldn’t dare take Ashton’s life. These setbacks might be exactly what Ashton needs. He needs to learn that against true power, he’s nothing more than a mere speck of dust.
“How can one gain anything without first losing?”
“B–But…” Neil trailed off as he watched Ashton’s agonizing struggle, his expression filled with sympathy.
Queenie snarled, “You should save the ‘buts‘ for someone else. If Ashton intends to lead the Legion within three years, he’ll have to face things far more horrific than this. If he can’t handle this heat, then he should just give up and kneel before Ember.
Neil merely sighed. He knew that once Queenie’s mind was made up, nothing he said could change her decision.
“I’ll make you grovel before my feet for what you’ve done today, you old hag!” Ashton’s eyes flashed with a frenzied glint as he glared at Ember, his veins standing out sharply across his skin.
Under Ashton’s bloody glare, Ember felt a sudden, inexplicable flicker of apprehension. “You have a remarkable willpower, but unfortunately, a weakling is still a weakling. You are not permitted to covet the Holy Maidens of the Divine Phoenix Order!” Ember’s pupils shrank as she sought to further intensify the pressure, intending to hold it until Ashton surrendered and pleaded for forgiveness.
It was then that Faye suddenly declared, her voice unyielding, “I’ll go with you, Ms. Blaze, but if you ever hann Ashton agam, I’ll instantly take my own life!”
