A middle–aged man stepped into the private room, his features sharp and defined. He was Aaron Sterling, the man who controlled a third of Linton Island’s criminal underworld and also Miranda’s father.
A young man followed behind him. He was good–looking, and his aura made it clear he had already stepped into the transformation realm.
He wore a faint, arrogant smile. When he noticed Ashton in the room, his brows tightened, and his gaze turned hostile.
The young man had already set his sights on Miranda. He didn’t like her standing close to another man, and he wanted her all to himself.
“Dad!”
Miranda smiled and made the introductions.
“This is Ashton Gray. He’s the blind date mom arranged for me. And this is Quinn Callahan, my best friend.”
“Hello, Mr. Sterling.”
Quinn’s body tensed as she spoke, and she sounded slightly nervous. Aaron’s attitude was calm and carried no obvious pressure, but the presence of someone in power still made her breathing uneven. She lowered her head and avoided his gaze.
Ashton gave a slight nod in acknowledgment. He wouldn’t have greeted Aaron at all if not for Miranda.
Aaron’s gaze swept curiously over Ashton. When he saw that Ashton didn’t avoid his scrutiny, he showed a trace of surprise, then looked at him again before chuckling.
“Your mom’s at it again. What a headache! I even brought Cyrus from Apex Martial Academy today. I thought you two could get to know each other,” he said.
“Miranda, it’s only been a few days, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. I even dreamed about you last night,” Cyrus Leighton said with measured calm.
Miranda and Quinn both flinched the moment they heard it. Goosebumps rose on their skin, and the line was unbearably cheesy.
“Dad, Ashton, and I are getting along well. We’re still getting to know each other. It’s not appropriate for you to bring another man here like this,” she said with a frown.
Cyrus’s eyes were bloodshot with rage as he stared at Ashton, then at Miranda. It felt like he’d just been humiliated right in front of everyone.
He swore that before the night was over, he would have Ashton’s arms and legs broken. Then, he’d dump him into the Linton River and make sure he disappeared for good.
Aaron ignored his daughter. The pressure on Ashton intensified as he spoke, his tone firm and commanding.
“Young man, you’re not suitable for her. Leave while you still can.”
Cyrus quickly chimed in. “Get the hell out of here. Don’t get ahead of yourself. Miranda is way out of your league.”
Miranda’s face hardened at the blatant humiliation. She quickly turned to Ashton.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t expect this to happen,” she said. “I really am sorry. I didn’t mean to put you in this position. Why don’t you go back first? I’ll treat you to a meal another day and make it up to you.”
