Victoria’s POV

“It’s… it’s the most beautiful piece of machinery I’ve ever seen,” I breathed, taking a half-step closer to the chrome stanchions surrounding it.

“Look at that paint job, Elijah. It doesn’t even look real. Compare this to my miserable Civic-the passenger door still won’t open from the outside, and it literally sounds like a blender full of rocks every time I turn the key. I’ve been suffering in that broken thing since sophomore year.”

I turned to face him, a wide smile breaking across my face.

“I swear, the second I get a real paycheck after graduate school, I’m saving up for something like this.”

Elijah raised his dark brows, a slow, amused look taking over his face.

“Your first paycheck, huh? Baby girl, do you have any idea how many zeroes are on the sticker of a custom Aston Martin?”

I let out a defensive, dramatic huff, turning to face him with a playful pout.

“Let a girl be delusional, okay? Maybe I’ll win the lottery. Or maybe I’ll design a revolutionary, earthquake- proof suspension bridge in my first month at a major firm and they’ll give me a massive bonus that covers it. It could happen.”

Elijah laughed, shaking his head as he stepped closer. There was no teasing in it, just amusement.

His hand left his pocket and settled on my waist, pulling me a little closer.

“It’s entirely possible. If anyone can terrify a corporate board into giving them a million-dollar bonus, it’s you.”

I felt a rush of heat color my cheeks, a bright blush spreading down my neck. I looked away, my heart doing that sweet, erratic dance it always did when he looked at me like that.

Elijah always did this. He never dismissed my wildest thoughts; he encouraged my delusions with a straight face, treating my ridiculous dreams like they were absolute certainties.

It was one of the deepest reasons I loved him. He made the world feel small enough for me to conquer.

“Mr. Carter?” the saleswoman asked, stepping back into the alcove with a leather folder in her hands. “Are we ready?”

Elijah didn’t look away from me. He kept his eyes locked onto mine as he answered her. “Yeah. This is the one we’re taking.”

My brain stalled. The words registered, but they didn’t make any sense. I paused, my eyes snapping from the purple car back to his face.

“Wait. What do you mean we’re taking? Elijah, you can’t just buy a sports car on a whim because I said it was pretty.”

Elijah just smiled, a devastating, wicked wink pulling at his eye as he leaned down to whisper in my ear. “Contrary to what you seem to think, I didn’t buy it on impulse, Victoria. I came here to pick up a new car. The saleswoman’s grin widened until her cheeks practically creased, her fingers tightly holding her tablet. “The registration is complete, Mr. Carter. We just need the final signature on the insurance waiver.” “Elijah, stop,” I hissed, my hand flying to his chest as I physically pulled him a few feet away into a quieter corner behind a pillar.

My face was red, panic rising in my throat as I looked at his completely unbothered expression.

“Are you insane? You can’t just drop that kind of money! We’re college students. Well, we were college students two weeks ago! Your dad gave you a budget for a graduation gift, didn’t he? You should be buying an apartment or investing, not buying a hyper-car because I had a delusional moment over a color!”

Elijah didn’t let me finish my lecture. He stepped into my space, his large hands anchoring firmly around my waist, lifting me slightly until my heels were barely skimming the marble floor.

He pulled me flush against his chest, trapping my protests against his shirt.

I gasped, my hands automatically gripping his shoulders for balance.

“Elijah-”
