Elijah’s POV

I didn’t even remember getting into the car. I didn’t remember the traffic, the red lights I undoubtedly blew past, or the sound of the tires screeching as I pulled into the emergency room bay.

All I knew was that my chest felt hollow, like someone had ripped my heart out and left me running on pure, terrified instinct.

The hospital corridors smelled overpoweringly of bleach and cheap floor wax.

My sneakers squeaked against the linoleum as I rounded the corner into the waiting area, the rest of the guys -Miles, Nate, Leo, and Jace-right on my heels.

Adele was sitting on a vinyl chair, her head in her hands, her shoulders shaking. Her eyes were blotchy and red when she looked up.

I rushed straight over to her, dropping to one knee in front of her chair.

“Adele! Where is she? What happened? What did the doctors say?”

“I don’t know, Eli,” Adele sobbed, wiping her wet face with a crumpled tissue. “We were just packing up the food… and she just collapsed. She couldn’t walk. She was in so much pain. Then she passed out before the ambulance even got there. They took her back through those double doors twenty minutes ago and no one has come out to tell me anything.”

A cold, sickening guilt took root deep in my gut, twisting until I could barely draw a full breath.

This was my fault. I had spent the last few days hours ignoring her texts, ignoring her calls, and wallowing in my bruised pride while she spent her days crying and stressing over how to fix things between us.

What if all that stress had triggered a panic attack?

What if her body had just broken down under the constant anxiety I had put her through? I had been so focused on my own hurt that I hadn’t considered what my silence was doing to her.

I pushed myself up, running both hands over my face, resting my forehead against the cold tile of the wall.

“Hey,” Nate’s voice broke through the noise in my head. He walked over, clapping a heavy hand onto my shoulder.

The playful spark he always carried was missing. Even so, he managed a small smile, like he couldn’t help trying to lighten the mood.

“Stop looking at the wall like you’re trying to bore a hole through it with your eyes, Carter. Victoria is tough, She handles you every single day, doesn’t she? A hospital room isn’t going to take her town.”

“Nate,” Leo warned softly from the chairs.

“What? You know I’m right,” Nate murmured, keeping his hand heavy on my shoulder.

“She’s a fighter, Eli. She’s just getting some rest so she has the energy to scream for you on Saturday. Stop spiraling. Besides, she spent all afternoon cooking for five grown men. She’s probably just exhausted from carrying this team.”

I gave a single, tight nod, appreciative of his attempt to lighten the atmosphere even if my brain couldn’t process the comfort.

Forty-five minutes passed. Every second felt like an eternity stretched thin across the ticking clock on the wall.

1 paced back and forth in front of the double doors, my eyes glued to the small square glass windows, waiting for a lab coat to appear.

Why was it taking so long? If it was just a faint, why hadn’t anyone come out to update us? Every nightmare scenario imaginable churned through my head.

Finally, the doors swung open, and a middle-aged doctor in green scrubs stepped out, holding a clipboard.

I was in front of him before he could even look up.

“How is she? Is Victoria okay?”

The doctor looked at my breathless state, then at the group of giant athletes hovering behind me, and offered a reassuring, tired smile.

“She’s out of any immediate danger, son. She’s completely stable.”

The breath I’d been holding burst out of me all at once, my shoulders dropping three inches.

“She was severe dehydrated and exhausted,” the doctor explained, tapping his pen against the chart.

“Her body essentially pulled the emergency brake because she hasn’t been eating or resting properly. We’ve hooked her up to an IV to replenish her fluids, and we ran a few blood tests just to be thorough. The results should be back shortly, but for now, she just needs rest.”

“Can I see her?” I asked immediately, not even waiting for him to finish.

“Yes, she’s in room 133,” the doctor nodded. “But I’d strongly advise against all of you crowding in there at once. She needs quiet right now.”

“We get it, Doc. Thanks,” Miles spoke up from behind me.

I turned around to look at the guys, but before I could say a word, Miles just jerked his head toward the hallway leading to the rooms.

“Go on, bro. Go see your girl.”

“We’ll be right out here,” Jace added, taking a seat next to Adele.

“Thanks, guys,” I murmured, my voice rough

I turned on my heel and walked down the quiet hallway until 1 reached room 133.

The door was slightly ajar. I pushed it open gently, stepping into the dimly lit space.

The sight of her standing still against the white hospital sheets made my throat lock up.

She looked so small, so pale against the stark bedding, an IV tube taped securely to the back of her left hand, feeding fluid into her vein.

My heart broke into a thousand pieces right then and there. My stupid, stubborn pride felt utterly useless
