I sat with my back resting against the heavy wooden headboard, my legs stretched out across the mattress, resting over Elijah’s chest.

Elijah was lying at the foot of the bed, his back resting flat against the covers, his arms propped up behind his head as he stared intently at the ceiling fan spinning overhead.

The silence between us was heavy, filled only with the faint sound of our breaths.

For months, Trinity had been the one topic we always seemed to avoid.

Her name came up now and then-in campus gossip, in passing comments from other people, or in the way Elijah would quietly shut down whenever the conversation drifted toward trust or betrayal.

I’d wanted to ask so many times. But I was scared of what I might hear.

Now, with the cream envelope lying open on the nightstand between us, avoiding the conversation wasn’t an option anymore.

“We were toxic,” Elijah began, his deep voice carrying a quiet, flat honesty. “There’s really no other way to put

it.”

I shifted my weight slightly, letting the warmth of my ankles against his chest remind him that I was right here listening.

“When Trinity and I started dating, I thought I was in love with her,” he said, taking a slow breath.

“She was vibrant, social, and everyone wanted to be around her. But she had a heavy past. She started sleeping around at a really young age, long before I met her. She’d been hurt by a lot of guys, and because of that, she was constantly seeking validation from every man in the room just to feel like she mattered.”

He paused, a muscle in his jaw flexing.

“Her past really messed with my head. Even though I knew who she was when I got with her, I couldn’t shake the insecurity. I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop, constantly wondering if I was enough for her or if she was going to look somewhere else. I took that paranoia and projected it right back onto her.”

He closed his eyes for a second, staring into the dark.

“And Trinity had her own baggage with me. Because of how athletes are talked about: the parties, the reputation of guys on the team sleeping around-she never fully trusted me either. She was terrified I was stepping out on her. So every time she went out or sought attention from other guys, I clamped down. I questioned her, I checked up on her, and I made her feel like she was under constant surveillance. We were constantly triggering each other’s worst fears.”

“How did it actually end?” I asked softly, my voice barely above a whisper.

Elijah swallowed hard.

“We had a massive argument at a party over her past and her behavior. I was just so exhausted from the constant fighting that I told her we were finished right then and there. She got hysterical, jumped into her car, and drove off before anyone could stop her. A few miles down the road, she lost control and crashed into a guardrail.”

He looked down at his hands.

“She wasn’t severely hurt, thank God, but the whole thing was a nightmare. The guilt ate me alive. I knew my words and our fight drove her over the edge that night. The fallout was messy enough that I carried that weight around for months. Every time her name came up, it flared back up. I felt like a bad person, Toria. Like someone who just brought trouble to anyone who got close to me.”

Silence settled back into the room.

I looked down at him, processing everything he had just laid out. What Elijah had carried wasn’t a story of villains and monsters; it was just the aftermath of two deeply broken people tearing each other down.

I slid down the mattress until I was lying right beside him, facing him on my side.

Elijah turned his head to look at me, his dark eyes brimming with vulnerability.

I reached out, cupping his jaw gently and brushing my thumb over his warm cheekbone.

“You guys were just really messed up together, Eli,” I said quietly, keeping my tone gentle and grounded.

“You were both carrying huge insecurities and feeding right into them. I can understand why you struggled with insecurity, but once you realized you couldn’t trust her, I think you should’ve walked away instead of trying to hold on tighter.”

I paused before nudging his side with my elbow.

“And seriously?” I couldn’t help the tiny smile that broke out. “A party? You picked a party

picked a party to break up with her?”

The corner of his mouth twitched.

“I know…”

“Were you both drinking?”

He gave a reluctant nod.

I sighed.

“That explains a lot.”

I gently cupped his face again.

“You had two people who were already hurting, arguing in the middle of a party after drinking. Nothing good was ever going to come out of that.”

“It was messy. It ended in the worst possible way. But you can’t spend the rest of your life blaming yourself for every choice she made after she walked away.”

He searched my face for a long moment, as if waiting for the judgment he was used to hearing.

It never came.
