Carter Is a Carter
Victoria’s POV
“Leo! You’re here!”
Miles broke through the heavy, awkward silence hanging over the patio, steering everyone’s attention directly toward the doorway.
He jogged over and threw his arm across Leo’s shoulders, pulling him into a wide, half–hug.
“Elijah and Victoria have huge news for us,” Miles announced, his face practically glowing with excitement.
If I wasn’t the actual pregnant person in the group, I would have sworn Miles was the one expecting.
The guy looked happier than Elijah and I had been when the two pink lines first showed up on the test.
What made it even funnier was the fact that less than five minutes ago, Miles and Elijah were practically ready to tear each other’s heads off right on this very deck.
Leo furrowed his dark brows, looking between Miles and the rest of us with a puzzled expression.
“What news? What’s going on?”
Jace leaned back against the patio railing, a subtle smirk playing on his lips as he crossed his arms.
“Well, let’s just say the captain has been busy off the field.”
“Extremely busy,” Nate added with a dramatic nod. “Scoring points in places where there are no umpires.”
“What are you guys talking about?” Leo asked, his patience clearly wearing thin as he shook his head.
“Speak normally for once in your lives. Guys, come on.”
Miles couldn’t keep it in any longer. He slapped Leo’s shoulder, his voice booming across the patio.
“Elijah and Victoria are going to be parents!”
Leo’s hazel eyes widened instantly. He stood completely still, his gaze shifting back and forth between Elijah and me in absolute disbelief.
“Bro… what?”
I offered him a warm smile, nodding slowly, while Elijah’s arm tightened around my waist, confirming the truth without needing to say a word.
“Holy shit,” Leo gasped, a genuine laugh bursting out of him as the shock wore off. He raked a hand over through his dark hair and pushing it back off his forehead.
“Oh my God. Man… this is incredible news. Congratulations, guys.”

Nova stepped forward from the edge of the doorway.

Even though she still looked pale and fragile from whatever illness had been dragging her down all day, her expression softened completely.
A gentle, genuine smile lit up her face as she looked over at me.
“You’re really pregnant, Victoria?” she asked softly.
I looked at her, returning the smile with a light nod. “Yeah. I am.”
Nova’s eyes flicked to Elijah, then back to me, realisation settling on her features.
“That makes so much sense now. Everything… why he’s been acting so protective, hovering over you, making sure you aren’t doing anything crazy.”
My cheeks warmed up, a faint flush creeping up my neck.
Beside me, Elijah didn’t even hide his satisfaction; he just cast a lazy wink in my direction, his fingers lightly tracing a slow pattern against my hip.
“Congratulations to both of you,” Nova added gently, the heavy tension from her own mood fading for a brief moment as she shared in the celebration.
Before the light mood could fully take hold, a rough, hesitant voice cut through the air from near the cabin doors.
“You’re… you’re pregnant?”
The words stuttered out of Caleb’s mouth.
The warmth on the patio instantly vanished, the air feeling as if it had been sucked out of the space entirely. The cheerful chatter dropped to zero.
Elijah’s grip on my hip shifted, his hand squeezing my shoulder as his entire frame went rigid beside me.
I pulled my gaze away from Nova and looked Caleb dead in the eyes, refusing to shrink back under his stare.
“Yes, Caleb. I am.”
Caleb just stood there, a strange, rapid shift of expressions passing across his face: shock, confusion, disbelief, and something deeper that he quickly buried.
For nearly a full minute, nobody moved, the silence stretching long and thin between us.
Finally, Caleb swallowed hard, letting out a single, breathy word. “Wow.”
A few minutes later, as the sharp edge of the tension gradually eased, everyone scattered across the outdoor lounge chairs and patio benches, sinking into a conversation that cut across different topics.
The talk quickly drifted toward the baby, rapidly devolving into a loud, chaotic debate over potential names

“If it’s a boy, we’re naming him Miles,” Miles announced loudly, leaning back in his chair with his feet kicked up on a wooden stool. “It’s clean, classic, and has built–in prestige.”
Nate scoffed, tossing a peanut shell at him.
“Not happening under my watch. We need to set the ground rules right now. Either I’m the godfather and the kid takes your name, or I get the name and you get to be the cool uncle. We’re not letting you have all the glory.”
Elijah looked between the two of them, raising an eyebrow with pure unimpressed judgment.
“What is wrong with you two? Who ever said I was going to let either of you idiots name my child? I’m not bringing a kid into this world just to have him answer to your names.”
Nate and Miles immediately clutched their chests, exchanging twin looks of mock offense.
“Rude,” Nate muttered.
“After everything I’ve done for this family,” Miles added, shaking his head dramatically.
“Name them, Miles?” Jace asked with a brow raised, and everyone burst into laughter.
Coach let out a heavy sigh after swigging a bottle of soda down.
“I guess I’m going to have to cut this off,” Coach announced, gesturing with the dark glass bottle in his hand.
Everyone turned their attention toward him, his brow furrowed in a serious line. Jace was the first to speak up, frowning in confusion.
“What are you talking about, Coach?”
Coach gestured with the soda bottle again, gesturing down at his own frame.
“I had planned on retiring soon and spending the remaining years of my life binge–eating whatever I wanted on a beach somewhere. I’ve spent twenty years keeping these muscles intact, and I was ready to finally let myself go.”
Natasha leaned back in her chair, shooting him an amused look with an arched brow.
