Wasn’t Invisible to Him
Victoria’s POV
We moved through the crowd until we reached a group gathered closer to the fire.
“No way,” one of the guys said, nudging the person next to him with his elbow. “Carter’s actually late for once. I was starting to think you-” He cut himself off the moment his eyes landed on me.
“Wait… who’s this?”
Elijah didn’t make a big announcement. He simply tugged me a little closer until our shoulders brushed.
The small move felt deliberate, like he was making a point without saying much at all.
“Victoria,” he said, calm and even. No last name, no explanation, no extra words, Just my name, spoken like it was enough.
“The legend herself!” A guy with messy mop of brown hair and a grin that looked like it was permanently fixed on his face stood.
“I’m Miles. Elijah’s better half, his emotional support best friend, and the guy who actually has a personality.”
He reached for my free hand, kissing the back of it while keeping a mischievous eye on Elijah.
“You’re far too pretty for this grump, Victoria. If you ever want an upgrade, you know where to find me.”
“Back off, Miles,” Elijah grumbled, pulling me slightly behind his shoulder.
A girl hovering at the edge of the circle–one of the ‘Socialites‘ who basically decided who was relevant on campus this week–let out a loud, performative laugh that was clearly meant to be heard.
She looked me up and down, her lip curling in a way that made me want to shrink into the dirt.
‘Wait, this is the girl?” she asked, looking at her friends. “Elijah, I thought you had standards. She’s… well, she’s a bit plain, isn’t she? Maybe she’s just here to do your homework.”
The other girls around her huddled closer, giggling behind their hands. My ears started to burn, the heat crawling up my neck.
wanted the grass to just open up and take me, but Elijah’s grip on my hand tightened, his thumb digging into my skin as if to keep me tethered,
‘That’s funny coming from you, Amelia,” Elijah said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet range. “Considering half of your face was purchased on your daddy’s credit card last summer. Maybe keep the comments on ‘beauty‘ to yourself until your Botox settles.”
The girl’s mouth fell open, her face turning a blotchy red. I stared at Elijah’s back, stunned.
He was defending me?
‘Bro, you fighting for her? That’s new,” another guy–Matt, a tall, arrogant–looking infielder–stepped forward, looking at me with pure condescension.
‘She’s not exactly your league, Carter. Nerd in a hoodie, scholarship kid… come on. This is embarrassing for the team.”
Г His words hit me harder than any of the others.
Elijah didn’t argue. He didn’t use his words. Before I could even blink, his hand released mine and his fist connected with Matt’s jaw.
The sound was a sickening thud that echoed over the music.
Matt stumbled back, clutching his face, while the rest of the team surged forward.
“Elijah!” Miles grabbed Elijah’s arm, hauling him back as he tried to lunge again. I grabbed his other sleeve, my hands shaking.
“Screw you!” Matt spat, wiping a smear of blood from his lip with the back of his hand.
“Hit me all you want, Carter. It doesn’t change the facts. We all know she’s just a placeholder until you get bored–a warm- up for your bed and nothing else.”
Elijah’s entire body tensed, his shoulder muscles bunching as he prepared to throw another brutal punch.
“Elijah, enough,” I whispered, my voice cracking as the first hot tear hit my lip. I grabbed his forearm, my fingers digging into his muscle to pull him back.
“Stop. I need to leave. I can’t be here anymore.”

Victoria! Wait!”

Elijah caught up fast, his hand gently closing around my wrist. He pulled me to a stop near the edge of the field, away from the noise. I tried to wipe my face, but the tears kept coming
