scattered thoughts. But the universe clearly had other plans today.
“Well, aren’t you just running through the entire Ashfield roster today?”
The familiar, smooth voice carried over the afternoon breeze, cutting right through my solitude.
I turned around to see Elijah leaning against a stone pillar a few feet back.
He had a faint, incredibly smug expression on his face, his dark eyes glittering with amusement as he took me in.
I rolled my eyes, though a genuine sense of relief washed over me at the sight of him. “Are you stalking me, Carter? Because there are easier ways to get my attention.” “That’s a bold accusation,” Elijah said, taking a step forward and stopping right beside me at the railing.
He looked out over the sprawling lawn, his shoulders relaxed.
“I just call it excellent timing. First the best friend, then the oldest brother. Should I be worried that Dominic is next on your list?”
“Dominic is… you know we don’t like each other,” I shot back, a real smile finally breaking through my heavy mood. “And for your information, Nathan was just asking about Willow.”
“Oh, I see,” Elijah murmured, tilting his head slightly to look at me. “And what about you, Zhen? Who’s asking about you?”
“Nobody,” I answered softly, my eyes drifting back toward the oak tree where Caleb was now laughing at something Nova had done.
“That’s not true,” he said quietly. “I asked.”
I turned to look at him, only to find his attention already on Nova and Caleb beneath. the oak tree.
The teasing look he’d worn a moment ago had faded, replaced by something quieter. He watched them for a quiet second before his voice broke the silence again. “How do you feel watching them?”
I didn’t answer right away. I let out a dry, breathy chuckle, staring down at my hands on the stone railing.
“Honestly? I don’t really know. I can’t even name it. A part of me is genuinely happy he’s alive and smiling. Another part feels entirely empty, and then… there’s a part that just hurts.”
Elijah let out a soft breath, a tiny, ironic smile touching his lips. “Sounds like a regular Tuesday for you, then.”

A real laugh caught in my throat, cutting through the tightness in my chest
I looked up at him, and he turned his head at the same time, his dark eyes locking onto
mine
“You don’t need to stress over it, Victoria, his tone softened. “You aren’t going to fees like this forever. With time, things clear out. Either the space in your head gets occupied by someone else, or you just naturally find a way to move on.”
I stared at him, my heart doing a strange, slow tum behind my ribs. His face was serious, his gaze open and completely focused on me.
Before I could stop myself, the question slipped past my lips.
“Do you want to be the one to fill it?” I whispered, looking right into his eyes. The one who helps me forget?”
Elijah looked at me, the quiet intensity in his expression giving way to a small, gentle
smile.
‘I would gladly play that role for you.”
