Damon reached back to pry her arms off, but she held on tighter, pressing her face into his neck. Her tears soaked his collar as her soft voice trembled, “I won’t leave you again.”
“Aubrey, you don’t say a word of truth,” Damon said, his eyes red–rimmed. He gripped her hands, but didn’t pull them away with any
It would be easy for a big guy like him to push away a frail woman like Aubrey if he really wanted to.
In the end, he couldn’t bring himself to push her away.
He truly loved her, yet felt utterly helpless; he was at his wit’s end with her.
He was tired, too tired to love anymore!
The moment he learned she was going to get a marriage license with Alex, he nearly lost his mind!
He couldn’t bear the thought of her marriage certificate becoming a reality; he’d either die or go insane.
force.
It wasn’t until after the car accident that he realized he had placed too much importance on love, forgetting that his family needed him, and his work at NASA needed him, too.
Of course, spending a lifetime with the woman he loved would be a life without regrets.
But life is bound to have regrets, and he accepted his fate.
He wouldn’t force anything anymore.
Aubrey sniffled, her voice hoarse, sincere, and serious. “From now on, no matter who tries to drive me away, I won’t leave. If you still want me, I’ll by your side forever. If you don’t want me anymore, I’ll leave immediately.”
Damon’s reddened eyes welled up. His hands slowly lowered as he said, “I don’t want you anymore.” The moment those words left his mouth, tears
trickled from the corners of his eyes, and he squeezed them shut.
Aubrey’s whole body stiffened, as if the sky had fallen. Suddenly, she couldn’t find a single reason to stay.
Should she shamelessly cling to him and refuse to leave, or should she grant his wish and leave right away?
Zachary’s words echoed in her mind.
“Damon never gave up on you, even knowing there wasn’t enough evidence to reopen your father’s case. He still asked me to investigate it privately. He’s been persistent all along. Why would you give up so easily?”
This time, she would never let him go, not even in death.

Aubrey clung to Damon tightly, refusing to let go. “Even if you don’t want me anymore, I’m not leaving. I’m staying put for good, so you’d better get
used to me.”
Damon’s eyes were bloodshot, but he let her hold him.
In the past, this would have been the sweetest declaration of love.
But he knew Aubrey wasn’t being genuine. He wouldn’t believe her words anymore; he would only believe what he saw.
If she could keep it up for a lifetime, then he’d believe her.
The sun dipped below the horizon, and crimson rays crept through the window, painting the entire room red.
Her tears had dried.

Aubrey had been holding him for so long that she was worried his body couldn’t take it. She asked softly, “Does your ribs hurt?”
His tone was low and heavy, neither warm nor cold. “You didn’t hit it. It doesn’t hurt.”
“Are you hungry? I don’t know if the housekeeper has finished cooking. I’ll go check and bring you some food to eat in your room, okay?”
“Okay.”
Aubrey released him, pulling away from his embrace.
In the dim, shadowy room, she straightened up and looked at Damon. His features were deep and handsome, remarkably striking.
Suddenly, she braced her hands on the bed, leaning in to press a fleeting, butterfly–light kiss on Damon’s lips.

Caught off guard by the sudden kiss, Damon instinctively reached out to grab her.
But she was too quick, his hand closing on empty air.

Having stolen her kiss, she gave a contented little smile, then hurried away, leaving Damon on the bed, stirred but unsatisfied.
Half an hour later.
Aubrey came into the room carrying a tray of food prepared by the cook.
Damon was now in his wheelchair, back at his desk and engrossed in his work.
“How did you get into the wheelchair?” Aubrey asked, setting the food down on the small coffee table.
Damon replied casually, “It wasn’t difficult.”
Aubrey remembered that when she left the room, his wheelchair had been quite far from the bed.
Did he crawl off the bed and then drag himself across the floor?
Confused, she set out the dishes and fork. “Come and eat.”
Damon wheeled himself over, and Aubrey filled his plate, carefully placing it in his hands. She added some meat and vegetables, then sat down to eat
herself.
The two ate their dinner in silence.
Time seemed to stretch out, gentle and unhurried.
Damon put down his utensils, took a napkin to dab his lips, and fixed his gaze on Aubrey. “Could you draw a half–full bath for me?”
“You want to take a bath?” Aubrey asked, surprised, looking up at him.
“Yeah,” Damon confirmed with a nod.
“Sure…” Aubrey agreed readily, flashing a smile. She quickly gathered the dishes and carried them out.
A little while later, Aubrey returned to the room.
She went into the bathroom, started filling the tub, and laid out Damon’s toiletries and pajamas before wheeling him inside.
Before Damon could react, she was already unbuttoning his shirt, asking as she went, “Your feet can’t get wet, right?”
“Right. Keep them elevated.”
“What about your chest?”
“Fractured internally, no external wounds. Just be careful not to press on it while washing.”
“Okay, I’ll be gentle.” Aubrey was diligent, stripping off his clothes without a hint of shyness, leaving Damon feeling somewhat awkward.
He hadn’t even suggested she help him wash, yet she was so eager.
While Aubrey was grabbing the body wash, Damon had already half–reclined in the tub, his leg elevated on a support.
Weren’t his legs supposed to be numb? How did he even get in here?
Aubrey, puzzled, knelt beside the tub and began to scrub him thoroughly.
As she washed, she sensed a subtle power stirring in the water.

Curious, Aubrey reached her hand into the water.
“Ah!” Damon’s entire body tensed. His strong hands gripped the edges of the tub, knuckles white. His broad chest rose and fell slightly, and his breathing turned heavy and labored. A mix of pleasure and discomfort, he groaned hoarsely, “Aubrey, what are you doing?”
“But aren’t you supposed to be numb? How can you even…?”
Damon leaned his head back against the tub, closed his eyes, and exhaled. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. Thank God for the cold water, or he’d be burning up.
“I only fractured my left leg. Why would I be numb?” Damon’s voice was hoarse and helpless, and he swallowed hard, fighting back his arousal. “Let go… or you might as well finish what you started.”
Aubrey quickly withdrew her hand, her ears burning with embarrassment.

Just a fractured left leg?

This was the moment Aubrey knew Tracy had lied to her. She felt more and more like her sister–in–law had fabricated the extent of Damon’s réparon She asked quietly, “Did you mix that deadly combination of antibiotics and alcohol?”
“I have some medical sense, you know. I wouldn’t be that reckless. Who told you that?”
Aubrey breathed a sigh of relief.
Even though Tracy had lied to her, she was relieved it wasn’t true. The anxiety that had been plaguing her finally subsided.
“Never mind, just telling a bad joke.”
It was indeed a bad one. Damon didn’t laugh, and looked at her, unimpressed.
Afraid he would misunderstand, Aubrey didn’t reveal the lies Tracy had told her over the past few days.
She didn’t blame Tracy either, as Tracy’s intentions were to help her overcome her inner demons and be her true self.
In fact, she had come to terms with it all.
She genuinely wanted to stay with Damon, not just because he had suicidal thoughts.
In their intimate relationship, she had always been the one who was coy and shy.
She wanted to change that.
Summoning her courage, she reached her hand back into the water.
Damon shuddered, exhaling deeply, reminding her with
a helpless tone, “Aubrey, don’t mess around.”
Her ears burning, she swallowed nervously and mumbled, “I’m helping you…”
Damon’s pupils dilated slightly as he stared at her in surprise.
