Chapter106
Aubrey returned to the firm to find her colleagues giving her strange looks. Something felt off.
Just then, her assistant hurried over. “Ms. Hayes, you’re trending?”
Aubrey stopped in her tracks.
The assistant handed her a phone. “Someone is attacking you online.”
Aubrey looked puzzled as she took the phone.

There was a short video with a huge number of views. In it, a plainly dressed middle–aged woman was making a public accusation that Vance Corp’s chemical plant was illegally discharging sewage, contaminating nearby farmland and drinking water, and harming the health of the residents.
There were tons of videos like this every day, and they usually didn’t get much attention.
But this middle–aged woman had posted Aubrey’s photo and was questioning, “Has my lawyer, Aubrey Hayes, been bribed? Is she pretending to help the residents with this lawsuit, but is actually stabbing them in the back to help Vance Corp win the case?”
Aubrey’s picture was too good–looking; in this era of prioritizing appearances, it immediately attracted a lot of attention.
Some stopped to watch the video just to see the “most beautiful lawyer,” while others were curious about how a female lawyer could be so unscrupulous, violating her professional ethics to be a hired gun for a malicious capitalist.
Aubrey watched the video without saying a word and handed the phone back to the assistant.
The assistant was nervous. “Ms. Hayes, should I contact the platform immediately and send them a cease–and–desist letter to take down this video?”
“No need.” Aubrey glanced at the colleagues in front of her.
A bunch of snobbish ‘elites‘ looked down on her because she had only been in the legal profession for a little over four years, considering her a young newbie with insufficient experience, always waiting to see her sink.
In a way, these colleagues were competitors.
Alex Foster entrusting her with the two–hundred–million–dollar commercial dispute had already made some colleagues jealous.
Even among righteous lawyers, there were those who were hypocritical and narrow–minded; especially Garrett Miller, who always gave her the impression of being two–faced and harboring ulterior motives.
“I want to boost it, add fuel to the fire.” Aubrey said as she walked towards her office.
Her assistant was stunned and hurried to catch up. “Ms. Hayes, this video damages your reputation. Many people are waiting to see you fail. If you lose the case, everyone will agree with the whistleblower’s claims that you took a bribe to intentionally lose the case. At that point, you’ll have no defense, and it’ll be difficult to establish yourself in the legal profession…”
Aubrey returned to her office, set down her bag, and said calmly, “As long as Vance Corp has engaged in any illegal activities, I will definitely win. If justice is on my side but I still lose, then that will only prove that the law is merely a tool for the powerful. If that’s the case, then I don’t want to continue working as a lawyer.”
Her assistant was encouraged. “You’re right. How much do you want to spend?”
“Is twenty thousand enough?”
Her assistant was shocked again. “Ms. Hayes, you haven’t even earned twenty thousand from this case, and you’re spending twenty thousand on promotion? That’s… a loss…”
“When I was a public interest lawyer, I often had to use my entire month’s salary to cover expenses,” Aubrey said with a calm smile, full of confidence. “Although this case doesn’t make money, it’s easy to gain visibility. In the eyes of my opponents, this video is a burden meant to weigh me down, but in
my eyes, it’s a strong current lifting me higher.”
Her assistant, filled with admiration, said, “Ms. Hayes, I think you will definitely succeed. I’ll go back to work now.”
As the assistant left the office, a dark shadow flickered past the glass door.
Aubrey’s eyes darkened, and she called out, “Mr. Miller, if you want to listen in, you’re welcome to come into my office. No need to lurk and eavesdrop.
outside.”
At this, Garrett Miller entered, holding a cup of coffee. He took a sip, feigning a profound air. “Aubrey, you’re still too green. You should consult the senior lawyers more, avoid being rash, avoid being aggressive, and don’t underestimate your opponents.”

Aubrey suppressed her anger. “What pearls of wisdom do you have, Mr. Milller
“If you want my advice, you’ll have to buy me dinner. I’ll teach you properly how to….”
Aubrey immediately cut him off. “I think I’ll pass. I wouldn’t want to waste a meal on that.”
The word “waste” was a massive insult and a show of contempt toward Garrett Miller.

Garrett Miller’s face instantly darkened, his eyes turned cold, and the hand holding his cup trembled. He gritted his back teeth, the veins in his neck bulging, so angry he couldn’t utter a single word. He turned around in a huff and left her office.
As soon as the man was gone, Aubrey walked over and shut the glass door.
Her depressive mood descended like a dark cloud, and her heart ached in waves.
Aubrey covered her face and took a deep breath, feeling agitated and irritable.
Seeing that disgusting man at work every day, him constantly trying to get her attention like a persistent ghost, was truly unbearable.
Her hands trembling slightly, she quickly pulled open her drawer, took out her antidepressant medication, and swallowed it down with cold water. She was almost out of her antidepressants.
After finishing up at the law firm, Aubrey went to see her psychiatrist.
At the hospital.
She saw the doctor, had her therapy session, and picked up her prescription.
As she was about to leave the hospital, she spotted a familiar figure in the hallway, someone who looked like Ryan Carter.
She hurried forward.
Getting closer, she realized it was definitely her best friend’s husband.
Ryan was holding a little girl, around four years old, and a woman with a report in her hand was walking beside him.
The woman had a gentle face and was talking to Ryan
“Ryan…”
Aubrey called out to him.
Ryan turned around, and when he saw Aubrey, a flash of panic crossed his face, but he quickly composed himself. “Aubrey Hayes?”
Aubrey quickly walked up to him, forcing a smile as she asked, “Is this your colleague?”
Ryan looked flustered, clutching the little girl in his arms. “She’s a friend, Lily Moore. This is her daughter, Sierra. She has a mild form of autism, and I’m here with them for a doctor’s appointment.”
This is Aubrey Hayes, my wife’s best friend,” Ryan introduced her to Lily.
Lily nodded with a slight smile. “Hello.”
Aubrey returned the gesture politely, then turned to Ryan. “I thought you grew up and went to school in Crestview City. When did you make friends In New Haven City?”
Before Ryan could explain, Lily jumped in, dropping the pretense, her tone laced with sarcasm. “Ms. Hayes, anyone would think you were Ryan’s wife, he way you’re talking.”
A woman’s intuition told her that Lily was more than she seemed, and that her relationship with Ryan was even more complicated.
Aubrey’s face darkened, and she wordlessly pulled out her phone.
That single action made Ryan panic, and he quickly explained, “Lily is from Crestview City. She married and moved to New Haven City, We’ve known each other for a long time. Sierra knows her too.”
“Classmate? Childhood sweetheart? Or ex–girlfriend?” Aubrey asked slowly.
“What’s it to you?” Lily snapped.
With that, Lily tugged at Ryan’s arm, pulling him towards the doctor’s office.
As he was being pulled away, Ryan looked back and said, “Aubrey, I’ll talk to you later. I need to get the kid to the doctor.”

Mani
Aubrey felt a sharp pain in her chest from anger, and she looked up, taking a long, deep breath
The thought of her best friend, Sierra, back in Crestview City, struggling alone to care for a six–month–old baby, on the verge of depression, with no xine to lend a hand, and having to put up with his aging mother, enduring hardships beyond what most people could handle, filled her with rage.
And here he was, in another city, taking care of another woman’s child.
Evening came, and the sun began to set,
Aubrey, carrying a bag of pomegranates, drove back to Blackwood Crescent.
She parked the car in the garage and walked towards the house, and in the long corridor, she saw Damon’s figure in the distance.
Damon’s wheelchair was positioned in the garden beside the corridor, the rosy sunset enveloping him, his features sculpted by the light and shadows, making him appear even more refined and noble, radiant and handsome.
A radiant smile bloomed on Aubrey’s face as she hurried over, crouching down in front of Damon. She held up the bag she was carrying. “Damon, Í brought you your favorite–pomegranates,”
From the moment she’d entered his line of sight, Damon had been watching her with a profound intensity.
Seeing her smile, a subtle curve touched his own lips. He glanced at the fruit in her hand, then back to her clear, bright eyes.
When Aubrey noticed his silence, she set the pomegranates down and gently placed her hands over his on his lap, softly kneading them.
Damon’s fingers stiffened slightly, his gaze dropping to her slender, pale hands.
He returned the hold, applying a gentle pressure, enveloping her entire hand in his. “Aubrey, why are your hands always so cold?”
Aubrey didn’t answer his question.
A sweet warmth spread through her. This man might say he didn’t want her anymore, but every little thing he did showed he cared, that he was concerned about her,
She tilted her head up to meet Damon’s gaze, her eyes soft. “Damon, call me Bree like you used to.”
Damon exhaled a heavy, bitter breath, his tone indifferent. “Nicknames are supposed to come from the heart. Are we even close anymore, Aubrey
