Aubrey looked up at Damon, a soft halo of light shimmering in her eyes, tears glistening like a misty haze. She was smiling, yet there was an inexplicable sense of melancholy about her.
Damon’s heart skipped a beat. His voice softened. “You…what’s wrong?”
Aubrey shook her head, a small smile playing on her lips.“Nothing. I’m just a little moved.”
“I was pointing out your flaws, not your virtues.” A hint of amusement touched Damon’s lips, his expression puzzled.“What’s so touching about that?” Aubrey murmured, “You wouldn’t understand,” before standing up and walking over to Ryan.
As Ryan and Alex wrapped up their conversation, she said in a measured tone, “Ryan, Damon has no connection to Lily, your friend. There’s no need for her to thank him personally for a simple favor: If you brought her, then take her with you. If she came on her own, I’ll have her leave.”
Ryan chuckled awkwardly. “A friend of a friend is still a friend, right? She’s in sales and just wanted to broaden her horizons, meet some people. No harm intended. Don’t read too much into it.”
Broaden her horizons?
Aubrey glanced towards the coffee table.
Lily was a social butterfly, laughing and chatting with everyone, a master of networking.
The distinguished young men present were almost all powerful figures in New Haven City, either rich kids or those with government connections. Their families were prominent, or they were individually talented and successful in their careers.
Any one of them would be a taste of the ‘high life‘ that ordinary people rarely get to experience.
Aubrey’s tone turned cold.“Ryan, Sierra is coming to New Haven City. Did you know?”
Ryan flinched, startled.“Huh? When did that happen?”
“Today’s flight.”
“Why would Sierra come?”
Aubrey spoke with measured calm, “I told her everything I saw and heard in New Haven City.”
“God damn it, Aubrey, are you out of your mind?” Ryan burst out, hands on his hips, taking deep breaths. His face was dark, his eyes blazing. “I told you, Lily and I don’t have anything going on. Are you trying to ruin my family?”
Before Aubrey could respond, Damon wheeled himself over, his voice steady and sharp:“Who the hell are you talking to like that?”
Ryan choked, meeting Damon’s cold, commanding gaze. Sweat trickled down his back.“I… it’s just a figure of speech.”
“Apologize,” Damon ordered, his voice like a whip.
“Aubrey, I’m sorry! It’s just a figure of speech. Mostly, you shouldn’t have told…”
Damon cut him off before he could finish.“Your wife brought your child all the way out here to see you. Shouldn’t you be happy? You haven’t see your wife and kid in two months. Don’t you miss them?”
There was a hint of bitterness and envy in Damon’s words. To be able to marry the woman you love and have a cute baby was a luxury he didn’t even dare dream of now, yet Ryan didn’t appreciate it at all.
How could he not be angry?
“I…” Ryan was speechless, meeting Damon’s dark, intense gaze before finally managing,“Of course I miss them.”
“Then that’s that. What else is there to complain about?”
Ryan took a deep breath, forcing down his anger as he gave Damon a thumbs–up.“Damon, you really are protective. No one can say a bad word about Aubrey now, huh?”
“Do you even need to ask?”
Ryan gave an awkward smile.“Well, you get some rest. I’ll take Lily and leave.”
With that, Ryan’s face darkened as he turned and headed to the coffee table to lead Lily away.
Lily looked completely bewildered, glaring at Aubrey as she walked away.

Aubrey finally felt some relief. She really did need to be kinder to herself, instead of constantly enduring, suppressing, and accommodating.
Trying to be a sensible, well–behaved kid had only exhausted and hurt her in the end.
She was only realizing this now. Hopefully, it wasn’t too late.
She crouched down, placing her hands on Damon’s legs.“Damon, helping me like this, will it affect your friendship?”
Damon gestured ahead.“Do I look like someone who’s struggling for friends?”
Aubrey glanced back to see the three sofas in the living room nearly full, everyone deep in animated conversation.
Damon’s words were a bit of a humblebrag, but she couldn’t help but envy him. A man as wonderful as Damon was bound to have plenty of great friends, each one a standout in their own right.
The smile on her face grew even brighter–and more radiant.
Just then, Zachary approached.“Can I borrow your girlfriend for a minute?”
Damon looked up, his tone wary.”
“What for?”
Aubrey turned her head, her brow furrowed in confusion, and looked up at Zachary.
He was the epitome of a stoic, steadfast man–calm, cool, and dashing, with a powerful presence. Wherever he stood, the very air around him seemed to crackle with integrity.
Zachary smirked, slipping a hand into his black pants pocket.“Just a quick word in private. What are you afraid of?”
Aubrey slowly rose, glancing from Zachary’s calm, collected expression to Damon’s deep, anxious gaze.
She understood what Damon was worried about now.
He was afraid his family would talk her out of this.
In her opinion, Damon’s worries were unnecessary.
These days, no one could persuade her to leave.
Aubrey leaned down slightly, touched the back of Damon’s hand, gently squeezing it in a comforting gesture, and whispered, “Damon, I’m going to chat
your friends?” with Zachary in the backyard. Why don’t you go hang out with
Damon remained silent, not responding..
Aubrey followed Zachary towards the backyard garden. His eyes never left Aubrey’s back until she disappeared from his sight. Only then did he exhale heavily, wheeling his chair over to the sofa to chat with his friends.
Everyone was chatting animatedly, but he was distracted, his eyes constantly darting towards the backyard, his face darkening unconsciously.
A friend noticed his absent–mindedness and the way his eyes kept drifting to the backyard, teasing, “Damon, doesn’t your neck hurt? That’s more consistent than my Roomba’s cleaning pattern.”
Everyone laughed.
Damon smiled sheepishly.
Another friend joked, “Damon’s like a sunflower that can’t find the sun right now, a little lost.”
